Senior Vaccination Transportation Program
shot_preparation.jpg
Beginning last week, the Township of Verona in conjunction with the County of Essex began to provide transportation for seniors who are 60 years and older and have difficulty securing transportation to obtain their vaccines. The Township of Verona Senior Transportation Bus picks up residents at their homes, bring them to the Steven Adubato Sports Complex in Branch Brook Park in Newark for vaccination, and then transports them back home. Transportation is being offered on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The county was administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose however until vaccinations with the J&J vaccine resume, the County is providing the Moderna vaccine for this site so a follow up appointment will be needed and automatically scheduled when you book your first trip.

Please note, you do not need to have a vaccine appointment already scheduled when you call for transportation. When you call to book transportation, you are also reserving your spot to receive the vaccine.

To register, call the Verona Department of Community Services at 973-857-4832, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am and 12 noon. Residents are asked to have their insurance information ready when calling.

Earth Day Event
Sustainable Verona & the Verona Environmental Commission are hosting an Earth Day Event at Grove Park on Saturday, 4/24. The VEC is hosting a cleanup and offering Verona residents free Tree Seedlings again this year. Sustainable Verona members will be handing out free Herb & Sunflower Kits from Morgan's Farm (available on a first come first served basis), along with reusable totes with information on the new NJ Plastics Ban.

Please fill out the form if you'd like to receive free tree seedlings from the NJDEP: https://forms.gle/a4m7WmYs728beS2a8

This registration form is first come-first serve and residents must pre-register at the provided link for the seedlings. Due to limited quantities, residents are limited to a maximum of 3 seedlings per household and we do not know exactly which species we will have available.

The seedlings must be picked up in-person at Grove Park (42 Grove Avenue) on Saturday, April 24th from 9 am-11:30 am during the VEC annual cleanup event and Earth Day Celebration.

We invite you to stay and participate in the cleanup event as well. Masks and social distancing are required.
Verona Community Garden
The Verona Community Garden recently held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to officially welcome this new green space to town. The Community Garden Committee would like to thank its main supporters Sustainable Jersey and Sustainable Jersey for Schools, the PSEG Foundation, the NJEA and the Landsberger Foundation.

They couldn’t have done it without other community supporters including the Junior Woman’s Club of Verona, the Verona Education Association, the Verona Board of Education, the Township Council, the Sustainable Verona Green Team, the Verona Environmental Commission, the amazing volunteers who make up the Garden Committee and of course Verona DPW, who has been absolutely amazing throughout this whole process, helping prep the site, run water access, place the shed and build the beautiful cedar beds.

We look forward to seeing the garden thrive for years to come!

All details on the Community Garden can be found here:

Outdoor Dining is Back!
Our businesses need your support more than ever so please try to shop and eat local whenever possible.

The current situation has forced our businesses to get creative in order to survive the economic fallout, which is why Verona has once again allowed for increased outdoor dining.

Many of our amazing restaurants have created some kind of outdoor seating, which can be enjoyed while following the safety guidelines put in place by the State.

We remind all our residents to support our local businesses and to please follow the rules when heading out in town.

New Emergency & Community Alert System
The Township has launched a new emergency and community alert notification system called Alert Verona through a platform called Rave Mobile. This new system utilizes text messaging, voice calls, email, social media, and the Smart911 app, which will allow us to communicate important updates to residents much more effectively.

NIXLE has been phased out and completely replaced.

Alert Verona has been pre-registered with all landline numbers, but we encourage our residents and businesses to register their cell phones and email addresses at alertveronanj.org as soon as possible to avoid missing any important information.

The safety of our residents is our #1 priority so please don't miss out on this opportunity to be a well-informed citizen of Verona.
