NASA Researchers James Irons and Eric Vermote Win Pecora Awards



Irons and Vermote were selected as winners of the 2025 William T. Pecora Award for their outstanding leadership and pioneering research that revolutionized the Landsat program and advanced global land-change monitoring.

The Landsat 10 Spacecraft Draft Request for Proposal (DRFP) is available for review via SAM.gov. Potential offerors may comment on all aspects of the draft solicitation by June 2, 2026.

The accelerating loss and shifting dynamics of US tidal wetlands

Coastal wetlands protect against flooding and erosion, provide critical habitat, and support commercial fisheries. However, these vulnerable ecosystems are in decline. Yang et al., 2026 reveals that despite decades of regulatory protection against direct human development, U.S. tidal wetlands have experienced a widespread and accelerating net loss of 1,640 km² from 1984 and 2024, primarily due to the decline of tidal marshes. Using nearly four decades of NASA-USGS Landsat data, researchers identified a critical shift in the drivers of this ecological degradation: while chronic stressors like sea level rise caused the bulk of the historical loss (around 60% of total area lost), acute shocks from extreme weather events—such as hurricanes and severe freezes—are now the dominant forces accelerating this decline. Direct human activity accounted for only 4% of total observed losses. Meanwhile, the total area of mangroves has remained seemingly stable only because climate-driven poleward expansion is offsetting massive weather-induced diebacks, masking the ecosystem's growing vulnerability. The researchers used a dense time series model to identify and characterize wetlands, relying on visible, shortwave-infrared, and thermal bands from Landsat. Looking to the future, the researchers state that these results signal that current conservation strategies are ill-equipped for a future dominated by extreme weather and call for proactive, large-scale, and adaptive restoration efforts to preserve these vital coastal habitats.

Occurrence of color cells, green, purple, and black, indicates the annual trend of loss, gain, and no significant change, respectively, at subbasin hydrological units during the 1985–2023 period. The horizontal or crossing stripes present the accelerated or decelerated trend, and when the symbols for accelerated and decelerated are absent, the strength of the trend is not significant. 2026 Landsat Science Team Meeting


The 2026–2030 Landsat Science Team met for the first time in-person May 5-7 at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, SD. During the meeting, team members learned about USGS and NASA priorities, received updates on key Landsat activities, and presented their proposed research projects.

Satellite Needs Working Group Biennial Survey


The Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) works to identify and address the Earth observation needs of civilian federal agencies. SNWG launched its latest biennial survey on May 18, 2026, and delivered updates on current solutions.
