Why did AGTA Place a Ban on All Synthetics?

Why Now? Why Not Just Synthetic Diamond?

Gary Roskin

Roskin Gem News Report

By now, you should have read that the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) plans on banning all synthetic gem materials from their GemFair trade shows beginning in 2025.

Why? Why does AGTA want to ban all synthetic gemstones from the show floor?

Synthetic colored gems have been around for quite a while. Why ban them now?

If it's because of the confusion within the diamond industry, why not just ban synthetic diamonds?

Do cultured pearls cause confusion with the sale of natural pearls?

Idar-Oberstein's Intergem Moves Show Dates

From Fall '24 to Spring '25- Mark your Show Calendars

INTERGEM – the international trade fair for gemstones, gemstone jewellery, and gemstone objects in Idar-Oberstein is moving their show dates!

April 11-13, 2025

To provide a better time slot for INTERGEM exhibitors and visitors in the tightly packed trade fair calendar, INTERGEM will move from autumn 2024 to spring 2025.

Next year, INTERGEM will take place from the 11th to the 13th of April instead of late September/early October.

As a small but fine and exclusive trade fair at the heart of the Idar-Oberstein’s Gem & Jewellery industry, INTERGEM was more and more squeezed between national and international trade fairs, such as Hong Kong or Munich. The new fair schedule will make logistics and planning easier for exhibitors and visitors.

Exceptional Blue, Cullinan Diamond Mine

Petra Tender up by 22%!

De Beers Sales Higher but Lags Behind Last Year?

MiningWeekly.com

The sale by the southern African diamond mining company, Petra Diamonds, of an exceptional blue diamond in its fifth tender cycle, lifted the average prices per carat received 22% higher than those of the prior Tender 4 sale.

Petra Diamonds, headed by CEO Richard Duffy, reported on Tuesday that the price "upliftment" was the result of a remarkable 14.76 ct exceptional clarity blue diamond (seen here), recovered from the Cullinan diamond mine in Gauteng, selling for $8.2-million.

De Beers

De Beers produces diamonds from open-pit, alluvial and coastal deposits in Canada, South AfricaBotswana, and Namibia.

De Beers CEO Al Cook says many diamond businesses are still taking a cautious approach to purchases as economic conditions remain uncertain, particularly in China with its slow pace of economic growth.

The third sales cycle of the year is nonetheless ahead of what is usually a slower period for rough diamond demand historically.

Talking Ancient Cameos

What Ancient Greek Sounded Like

Association NUNC

https://nunc.ch/en/a-viral-love-poem-in-the-ancient-world/

"From present-day Spain to Mesopotamia, the same Greek words can be found, generally engraved on inexpensive precious stones (agate, onyx or sardonyx). The best-preserved examples were found on a piece of jewellery around the neck of a young woman in a sarcophagus in Hungary and inscribed on a wall in ancient Cartagena.

Professor Tim Whitmarsh of Cambridge University is convinced that by linking these different artefacts, he has put his finger on the expression of ancient “pop culture”. The equivalent of a rock song, a theme that could have been written by the Sex Pistols,”

Ancient Jewels

Medieval ‘Love Token’ Ring

Found by "Metal Detectorist"

The Fulford Ring is a beautiful gold ring set with a ruby and emerald and one of the finest examples of medieval jewellery found in York.

Gold finger rings set with two different jewels are rare archaeological discoveries and this is the first example ever discovered in York. Whilst we don’t know who the ring belonged to, its incredible artistry and rich materials make it one of the finest pieces of medieval jewellery from York.

The ring probably functioned as a love token or betrothal ring.

Also in the Museum Collection

A late 15th-century gold engraved pendant, set with a large semicylindrical blue sapphire, the Middleham Jewel was discovered by yet another metal detectorist, in 1985, near Middleham Castle, the northern home of Richard III.
