Increasing U.S.-Africa Business Ties

  • This Wednesday, USTDA Director Leocadia I. Zak will attend the U.S.-Africa Business Forum in New York City. Following a similar event in 2014, the Forum will convene African heads of state and U.S. CEOs for a day of programming around key commercial issues. USTDA will announce new clean energy projects across the continent during the event, parts of which will be streamed live by its hosts, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • On Thursday, Director Zak will host a Climate Week Conversation on unlocking clean energy investment in sub-Saharan Africa. She'll join CEOs from African clean energy companies to discuss how early-stage preparation assistance can help attract financing for projects across Africa. 
  • USTDA is expanding its investments in sustainable energy projects on the continent. Interested project sponsors in sub-Saharan Africa - or U.S. companies working with them - should submit an initial proposal (not to exceed 5 pages) to USTDA no later than Monday, September 26 at 5:00pm EST to be considered for funding. Transnet, a South African state-owned freight logistics company, recently issued a request for proposals for the design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and eventual handover of an inland container terminal in Tambo-Springs. The objective of the project is to migrate rail-friendly cargo off the country's road network.

Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), the sole distributor of electricity in Jamaica, has released a Request for Proposals for its Smart Streetlight Program (Supply of Smart LED Streetlights, RFP# E-3518). The Government of Jamaica has mandated JPS to institute a program to upgrade the existing system of 105,000 high pressure sodium (HPS) street light fixtures to 110,000 LED (light emitting diode) street lights. The new fixtures will have intelligent controls and revenue quality metering capability.

Market Intelligence: Brazil - Sabesp Biogas Electricity Plant
Brazil's parastatal Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo - 'Sabesp') issued a notice for the construction of a biogas electricity generation plant in São Paulo. The project will be completed through a 30-year concession agreement with the private waste treatment plant Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto de Barueri (ETE).
Sabesp is currently in the public hearing stage, and has not yet released an RFP.

USTDA is hosting the Vietnam Natural Gas Sector Reverse Trade Mission on October 16-29, 2016.  The delegation will include up to 12 high-level representatives from Vietnam's energy sector seeking to modernize, expand and improve the overall efficiency and performance of the country's natural gas infrastructure.

As part of the Vietnam Natural Gas Sector Reverse Trade Mission there will be a one-day Business Briefing in Houston, Texas on October 24, 2016. This Business Briefing will provide a forum for 12 high-level representatives from Vietnam's energy sector to share information with U.S. companies on their needs, upcoming procurements and plans for natural gas development in Vietnam. One-on-one meetings with the delegates will be arranged for U.S. companies.
