Opening Carol - "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus"(CH 244)
Advent Wreath and Reading
LEADER: Listen now to the words of the prophet Joel:
Blow a trumpet in Zion,
And sound an alarm on My holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
For the day of the LORD is coming;
Indeed, it is near.
LEADER: Today is the first Sunday of Advent: a season of preparation, of watching, and waiting. We remember the prophets of old who spoke of a child to come, one sent by God to bring hope and salvation to God’s people.
ALL: No one knew when this child would come. Each generation hoped and prayed the Messiah would come in their lifetime.
LEADER: God kept His promise! However, God sent the Messiah, the Christ, in a way no one expected. God sent himself - the very Son of God. In doing so, the incarnate Christ ushered in a new way to be in relationship with God and a new way of living.
ALL: Christ’s birth renews our hope in the promises of God. We celebrate His first coming and anticipate His second coming.
LEADER: Today, we light the Prophets’ Candle, as a symbol of our continued hope that Christ is doing new things in our world and in our lives.
ALL: Christ came, Christ is with us, Christ will come again.
"It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" (CH 251)
Prayers of the People
The Lord's Prayer
Our father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Special Music - "The Light Has Come"
Closing Carol - "Love Has Come" (CH 256)
