Caltrans Reopens State Route 70 during Winter Suspension

Winter Shutdown of Work Allows Full Traffic Access While Construction Pauses

BUTTE COUNTY — Caltrans is alerting motorists that traffic on State Route 70 (SR 70) at Jarbo Gap will fully reopen in both directions by Friday afternoon, December 12, as construction crews prepare to place the project into a planned temporary winter suspension.

During the 2025 construction season, crews advanced major structure work on the project, including drainage inlet construction, bridge deck concrete polymer placement, and temporary striping activities.

With winter conditions approaching and a key railing system arriving later than anticipated, Caltrans will suspend on-site work until spring 2026. This planned pause improves safety for workers and the traveling public during the winter months while allowing two-way traffic to resume.

The project team completed preparation work this week to safely restore traffic flow in both directions during the suspension period. Motorists should continue to use caution when traveling through the area and watch for roadside crews as they finalize striping and cleanup activities.

Caltrans District 3 is responsible for maintaining and operating 4,385 lane miles in 11 Sacramento Valley and Northern Sierra counties. Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and slow in construction zones for the safety of travelers and crews performing these improvements.

Caltrans issues construction and road condition updates on X @CaltransDist3 and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict3. For real-time traffic information, click on Caltrans’ QuickMap quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ or download the QuickMap app from the App Store or Google Play.
