TRAFFIC SHIFT TO NEW LANE ALIGNMENT ON NORTHBOUND I-495/CAPITAL BELTWAY IN TYSONS-MCLEAN AREA SCHEDULED FRIDAY NIGHT, MAY 9

Northbound I-495 traffic to shift on Friday night, May 9; Saturday night, May 10 is backup date for weather or other delays

FAIRFAX – Tomorrow night, Friday, May 9, crews plan to shift traffic on northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) in the Tysons-McLean area onto approximately two miles of newly-constructed lanes on the outer section of the highway. This traffic shift and related lane closures will begin Friday night, with all four northbound Beltway lanes reopened in their new alignment by 10 a.m. Saturday morning, May 10. Saturday night will serve as a backup date in case of inclement weather or other work delays.

Southbound I-495 (Outer Loop) lanes are planned to be shifted in late May or early June. These important traffic shifts will enable crews to access the center portion of the Beltway to build the new 495 Express Lanes.

What Drivers Can Expect During Northbound I-495 Traffic Shift (May 9-10):

  • Traffic on all four general-purpose lanes of northbound I-495 from just south of Old Dominion Drive to the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) will be shifted onto new lanes built on the outer side of the highway.

  • Implementation of this traffic shift will entail a single mobile lane closure beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9, followed by two additional lanes closing at 9 p.m., on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and the GWMP.

  • One lane will remain open to traffic, except when intermittent total traffic stoppages and/or slow-roll traffic operations occur between Midnight and 5 a.m. Police will be on hand to assist with directing motorists.

  • Lanes will begin to reopen at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. All four northbound lanes will be open and in their new alignment by 10 a.m.

  • Additionally, the on-ramp from westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) to northbound I-495 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday. Affected drivers will be detoured to southbound Route 123 (Exit 19A) to access northbound I-495 toward Rockville/Baltimore.

Motorists are urged to slow down, eliminate distractions and drive with heightened caution as they acclimate to the newly aligned Beltway lanes, and as work ramps up in the center area of the roadway. As construction continues in this portion of I-495, travelers should expect narrowed lanes and shoulders, traffic pattern adjustments and lane closures during non-peak travel times.

All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary. Drivers are urged to use caution and expect potential delays if traveling through this area.
