A Season of Thanks. A Year of Mooseness!

November is here, and at North Star Reach, our hearts are full of gratitude ... and Mooseness!

As our 10-Year Anniversary, our Year of Mooseness, begins to draw to a close, we're reflecting on the incredible moments that made 2026 so special. From laughter echoing through the cabins and friendships formed around campfires to meaningful connections with children and families beyond the gates of camp, this year has been filled with reminders of what makes North Star Reach so magical.

And none of it would be possible without YOU, our amazing Campily!

While our 2026 camp programming has wrapped up, the Mooseness isn't slowing down just yet! November brings our Fall Work Weekend, November 6–8, as volunteers help care for the place where so much magic happens. We're also looking forward to celebrating the incredible people who give so generously of their time and talents at our Moose Wonderful Time of the Year Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on Saturday, December 5.

And as Giving Tuesday and our year-end campaign approach, we're reminded that the greatest gift we can share is hope. Every act of kindness, every volunteer hour, and every gift helps create life-changing experiences where children with serious health challenges and their families can belong, thrive, and imagine a hopeful future.

In this month's Trail Mix, we're celebrating our Campily, sharing ways to stay connected, and looking ahead to opportunities to keep the Mooseness going strong as we prepare for another incredible year.

From all of us at North Star Reach, thank you for making our Year of Mooseness one to remember. Here's to a November filled with gratitude, generosity, and a whole lot of Mooseness!

Friend of NSR, we hope you enjoy your monthly snack of stories below!

Volunteer Profile | Katie Doyle

For pediatric cardiac ICU nurse Katie Doyle, volunteering at North Star Reach offered something she didn't realize she needed: a chance to see children beyond their medical diagnoses and hospital stays. Working in critical care while deeply rewarding, it can also be emotionally demanding. "Working in critical care, you're often meeting families on what might be one of their worst days," Katie shared. "You witness so much suffering, uncertainty, and heartbreak that it can sometimes be difficult to see beyond the hospital's haunted walls."

Before arriving for a Family Camp Weekend, Katie had been wondering whether critical care was still the right path for her. She was drawn to volunteering at camp because she wanted to experience a different side of the children she cared for professionally. "I wanted to see what life looked like beyond the monitors, medications, procedures, and hospital rooms that had become so familiar to me," she said. What she found at camp exceeded her expectations.

Throughout the weekend, Katie watched children and families laugh together, build friendships, and create joyful memories. At North Star Reach, medical conditions took a back seat to childhood adventures, family connections, and community. "These were children whose lives had been shaped by serious medical challenges, yet at camp, those challenges didn't define them," Katie said. "They were just kids being kids." She was especially touched by the strong sense of belonging among campers, families, volunteers, and staff. "There was something so beautiful about watching people come together, many of whom had never met, and create an environment where everyone felt understood, included, and celebrated," she reflected.

One memory from the weekend remains particularly meaningful. While helping a four-year-old camper paint a pumpkin, Katie realized that a simple accommodation could make all the difference. Concerned about the child's safety in a standard chair, they created a cozy painting space on the floor with a blanket and her favorite colors. "Something about that moment really resonated with me," Katie said. "In the hospital, I'm so accustomed to thinking about what these children need medically that it was refreshing to focus on something as simple as making sure a little girl could safely and comfortably paint her pumpkin." The experience offered a powerful reminder that caring for children extends beyond medical interventions.

"Sometimes it's about recognizing the little things that allow them to experience the same childhood joys as everyone else," she said. "And sometimes, making those moments possible is just as meaningful."

By the end of the weekend, Katie had gained far more than a new perspective on camp. She left with a renewed appreciation for the resilience of the children and families she serves and a deeper understanding of quality of life beyond the hospital’s setting. "North Star Reach reminded me that there is so much more to these children than the illnesses we treat, and so much more to nursing than the suffering we witness," she said.

Reflecting on her time at camp, Katie described the experience as a meaningful reminder of why she chose nursing in the first place. "Sometimes, when you're surrounded by the hardest parts of healthcare, you need to be reminded of the joy, resilience, and life that exist on the other side," she said. "That weekend gave me a glimpse of exactly that."

Lasting Impact

In Our Own Words | The Frustaglio Family

Our son Roman was born with a life-threatening metabolic condition, which we managed until he received a liver transplant in 2024. We first learned about Family Camp through our transplant team and decided to give it a try, hoping to give our kids a fun weekend and make some special family memories. What I didn’t anticipate was just how much of an impact the experience would have on us as parents.

As parents of a medically complex child, so much of our energy goes toward holding everything together for our kids and our family. We navigate the appointments, hospitalizations, uncertainty, and the emotional weight that comes with a life-changing diagnosis, often putting our own feelings on the back burner. I didn’t realize how much I needed to be surrounded by other parents who just get it. Parents who have experienced the heartbreak and grief of a diagnosis, endured countless nights in hospital rooms, and understand the challenges that come with a medical journey. There is something incredibly comforting about being around people who speak your language without having to explain a single thing. For a weekend, we didn’t feel different or like we had to explain our story. We simply belonged.

We had an absolute blast connecting with the other families, watching our kids make memories, and enjoying time together. It was a weekend where we could be fully present with our children, unplugged from electronics and the everyday responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, and keeping up with life. In a world where we are constantly pulled in a million directions, the gift of time and presence is worth more than anything. We came hoping to give our kids a memorable weekend, but we left with something much bigger: a sense of community, friendships, and the reminder that we aren’t walking this journey alone.
