Palm Beach County Fire Rescue on scene of the collision

Just recently, there were three major accidents involving cars circumventing safety gates at a railroad crossing.

Trains can't stop quickly, and most need a mile or more to come to a full stop. These fast-moving Brightline trains are traveling about 80 miles per hour, and are closer and faster than perceived!

Moreover, it's illegal to bypass the safety gates once lowered.

These trains only take seconds to clear the crossing and we urge everyone to pay attention. Look, listen, live!

Warning: Graphic video released by Brightline of a tragic accident involving a motorist attempting to beat the train!

The tragic pedestrian death that occurred during the opening of the Royal Park Bascule Bridge (owned and operated by FDOT) is extremely rare.

However, the county's Engineering Department is taking extra preventive measures for the eight county-operated bascule bridges. This includes inspecting all vehicular and pedestrian warning devices to ensure they meet all safety policies and procedures.

Additionally, all county bridge tenders are regularly required to complete refresher training that involves safety protocols, including visually checking spans for vehicles/pedestrians and verbally announcing "Clear the span" in the direction of the bridge.

Elevated boardwalk at Green Cay

Nature center at Green Cay

I recently toured the county's Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility and the adjoining Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center in Boynton Beach. The site is a unique collaboration of two facilities resulting in a state-of-the-art wetland and nature reserve open to the public.

The wastewater treatment process starts with wastewater being filtered and disinfected. Biosolids are removed and sold to the Solid Waste Authority to burn for energy!

Over two million gallons of treated wastewater are pumped into the surrounding wetlands to create valuable wildlife habitats for many Florida species.

Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center features various activities including an elevated boardwalk for bird and wildlife watching, interactive educational activities and more.

Law enforcement agencies have reported an uptick in car break-ins. Here are some tips on avoiding a car break-in:

  • Never leave valuables out on your seat, dashboard or floor
  • Always lock your door even at home, where most unlocked vehicle burglaries happen
  • Secure purses, laptops, backpacks and shopping bags in the trunk
  • Don't leave your keys in the car

If your vehicle is broken into, report it to law enforcement even if nothing significant was taken

We are pleased to report that the Code Enforcement Lien Amnesty program in late 2021 was successful.

Over 1,000 code enforcement liens were on residential and non-residential properties in unincorporated Palm Beach County when the program was introduced.

As a result of the program, over 250 liens were forgiven, which allowed the property owners to obtain clear titles that would enable them to refinance or sell their properties.

One particular case in South County involved Astro Auto Salvage located on Military Trail in Delray Beach. After decades of code enforcement issues, the program provided the property owner an opportunity to correct several violations, and the lien (over $1 million) was forgiven. The new owners are planning a self-storage facility that will be more conducive to the area.

The county recently renewed a lease agreement with the City of Boca Raton for over seven acres of oceanfront property at South Beach Park in Boca Raton.

In 1972, the county purchased the property and leased it to the city for 50 years which expires on March 7, 2022. The new lease is for 20 years with two 20-year renewal options.

South Beach Park is a true treasure for the area featuring a life-guarded beach, restrooms, picnic facilities and parking.

Black History Month is an annual celebration started by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926 dedicated to honoring African Americans and raising awareness of Black history.

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.

This year's theme is "Black Health and Wellness" that acknowledges the legacy of Black scholars in Western medicine and nontraditional practitioners such as midwives, naturopaths and herbalists.

The Jupiter and Lake Worth Railway ran 7.5 miles from Jupiter Inlet to the north end of Lake Worth. On July 4, 1889, the railroad began operation as Lake Worth pioneers celebrated with a free ride to Jupiter.

In 1893, an article in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine dubbed the line the “Celestial Railroad” because it stopped at Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and Juno. Mars and Venus were freight stops for loading pineapples, coconuts, citrus and other locally grown produce.

In 1893, Henry Flagler used the railroad to haul lumber and supplies to build the Royal Poinciana Hotel on Palm Beach. Bankruptcy and Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad ended the Celestial Railroad’s operations in April 1895.
