Training Begins for Upcoming Prescribed Fire Near Baywoods Community
Dear Bonita Bay Residents,
In preparation for the controlled burns scheduled for late April to early May, the contractor overseeing the burn process, Willowcreek, will begin staging and conducting training in the Baywoods Community near the eagle's nest starting on Friday, March 28, weather permitting. During this time, you will see fire trucks in the area along with firefighters using heavy equipment. This is normal procedure before a controlled burn and no need for alarm.
Willowcreek, in conjunction with BBCA, is also actively monitoring the fledgling process of the nearby eagles to ensure no wildlife will be present during this event. The prescribed fire will only commence once it has been fully verified that the eagles have completely vacated the area and a rain event is forecasted.
Prescribed fires are an effective tool used on Florida’s Wildlife Management Areas. It reduces invasive exotic plants and debris to restore the health of our ecosystem, and prevents uncontrolled wildfires by removing the buildup of dangerous fuels from overgrown brush and litter.
The impact of the fire will be minimal to the community and wildlife. Smoke plumes will be visible rising into the air, but will quickly dissipate. Harmless ash may also be present during and after the burn. A smoky scent will be present for a day or two afterwards.
