TechSmith Corporation, a provider of visual communication tools for the workplace, in partnership with workplace research-based consulting firm Global Workplace Analytics and Caryatid Workplace Consultancy, have released The 2024 Workplace Flexibility Trends Report, which examines the state of where, when and how people work and collaborate. Based on a survey of 900 U.S. leaders in HR, real estate, IT, and product roles, the report reveals most employers have not adapted their practices to support their shift to flexible work. It also explores the importance of different wants and needs across generations, company size, and workplace experience.
Just five years ago, less than 5% of employees had the option to work remotely on a regular basis. The report finds 58% now have that option at least some of the time. But while a majority of employers have embraced a change in “where” people work, many have not adopted the new practices they need to do it well. Nearly three out of four respondents indicated their employer has not trained its managers to lead a distributed team, established team or meeting norms, or adopted best practices to support working across distances.

OSCRE International, the nonprofit focused on real estate data standards and effective data governance practice, just announced that in a 3-2 split decision, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has finalized rules initially proposed in March 2022 that require registrants to disclose certain climate-related information in registration statements and annual reports.
Over 20,000 comments were filed during the public comment period, with many of them focused on the difficulty in obtaining Scope 3 emissions data. Separate from the SEC rule, more than 60 local and state environmental reporting requirements have either already been approved or are under consideration that do include Scope 3 reporting requirements.
To help you navigate the new reporting mandate, OSCRE has a new resource page devoted to energy data and the SEC, and an on-demand Effective Energy Data Management Practices Certificate Program.

The most common roofing objective of building owners and facility managers is to extend a roof’s useful life. Or at least it should be. Many roofs are replaced prematurely, wasting valuable budget dollars and causing unnecessary disruption.
SR PreVision, powered by Simon Roofing, helps to prevent that from happening by equipping building owners and facility managers with the information necessary to make smart decisions. This multi-step process goes far beyond traditional inspections to provide a comprehensive summary of a roof’s condition, including a reliable prediction of its remaining useful life and viable solutions to extend it.
The first step in the process is an extremely thorough roof evaluation that includes:
- CAD drawings to streamline the process
- Infrared scans to detect wet insulation
- A visual inspection by a specially trained SR PreVision technician. Every technician is equipped with a tablet and an online program to walk through each inspection consistently and correctly. Everything is documented and uploaded through the tablet, including photos, roof type, pitch, composition, and any defects or problem areas.
- A membrane and core sample taken from the roof are sent to the SR PreVision laboratory for testing.

Each project is unique and has various drivers for carpet selection — beauty, sustainability, or durability. Universal Fibers can meet all these priorities with a portfolio of solutions. When it comes to specifying carpet fiber, nylon 6,6 products continue to outperform the competition in appearance retention and resisting soiling and staining, which can affect the lifespan of a carpet installation — which is why nylon 6,6 remains a superior choice for specifiers seeking to invest in a long-term solution.
This fiber specification regularly contributes to a cleaner indoor environment for facility occupants, as well as a longer lifecycle for the project itself. Universal Fibers supports the market by delivering top-quality, sustainable nylon 6,6 products that last. In today’s world, “lasting performance” can introduce complexities. If nylon 6,6 boasts lasting endurance, what implications does this hold for the environment? How does its unparalleled durability influence design adaptability? Universal Fibers offers sustainable nylon solutions for your next project.

Standalone wireless system FirstLink by Bodine integrates all necessary emergency lighting components and monitors the status of the lighting system at all times, helping you maintain code compliance with virtually zero effort. The FirstLink emergency egress system comprises enabled exit signs, wall packs, emergency LED drivers and the FirstLink app installed on a mobile device. Instead of staff shuffling around a facility, climbing ladders, and pushing buttons to test individual units, FirstLink components automatically perform all required testing. The app downloads the status of all devices and creates an easily exported report. A wireless mesh network ensures reliable connections, even during the loss of individual devices. If the app can communicate with just one device, the status of all devices can be read. Once the status is downloaded, the data is uploaded to the cloud.
FirstLink emergency lighting system components can be easily installed by a contractor or end-user, making it field-install friendly. Facility managers (FMs) can quickly add new products, accessories, and features without updating the existing FirstLink hardware in the building. The easy-to-navigate FirstLink smartphone application allows users to configure a system, view and export results, change testing schedules, and more. For a painfully funny look at why you need Bodine’s FirstLink, check out this video as well: “Emergency Lighting Testing — Before FirstLink."

The U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) Green Proving Ground (GPG) program, in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), recently released LED Lighting and Controls Guidance for Federal Buildings as part of the agency’s commitment to sustainability and reducing costs to taxpayers.
Lighting systems have a tremendous impact on building energy use. Depending on a building’s age and lighting system, lighting consumes between 10% and 25% of a building’s electricity. Conversions to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting typically save 50% of electricity over a fluorescent baseline, and lighting controls can save an additional 80% of lighting energy.

Addressing the many changes in the workplace, commercial interiors event NeoCon is presenting keynotes and educational sessions that recognize the dilemmas of interior designers and facility managers as they figure out who is using the space for what type of work for how many days a week and what that space should look like. During NeoCon 2024, June 10-12 at THE MART in Chicago, over 40,000 people will gather to explore new commercial furniture and furnishings solutions and listen to the following sessions at the NeoCon Presentation Studio.
Like many cities across the U.S., occupancy in the downtown Chicago offices is hovering at just over 55%. Hybrid models of work — with employees working from home part time and at an office part time — seem to be here to stay. They also present challenges in designing offices. Come hear from designers, executives in the trenches and leasing agents who have a bird’s-eye view into making (or remaking) spaces that reflect the nature of work today. Find out what has worked—and what hasn’t—in encouraging employees to come back to the office. (Hint: It’s more complicated than installing a ping-pong table.)
