In the space of a year, Matthew Lanoue’s journey from student to Application Analyst highlights the power of curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for solving complex problems.
Joining TransForm in March 2025, Matthew’s path into the organization began as a Computer Science student at the University of Windsor. Through the school’s co‑op program, he gained valuable hands-on experience in IT; first as a Linux System Administrator with Statistics Canada and then supporting healthcare technology with the County of Essex.
Reflecting on those early roles, Matthew shared how each step helped shape his career direction.
“At Statistics Canada, I developed strong technical skills and gained insight into what a career in IT could look like post-graduation,” he noted.
A subsequent co‑op placement introduced him to healthcare IT, an experience that would ultimately guide him toward TransForm in January 2025, when he joined TransForm’s Regional Service Desk. This is where working closely with end users quickly deepened his appreciation for the organization’s impact.
“Seeing the importance of how stable, reliable systems help facilitate healthcare in our community fundamentally changed my approach to IT support,” Matthew explained.
That dedication didn’t go unnoticed. After nearly a year, he stepped into his current role as an Application Analyst where problem-solving takes centre stage.
For Matthew, the most rewarding part of the job is tackling tough technical issues head-on.
“Being able to investigate, diagnose, and remedy technical issues that seem impossible provides the greatest reward,” he said of his role.
Of course, with complex work comes competing priorities and Matthew said time management is one of the biggest challenges.
“Some days, you come in at 8 a.m. with a plan, and by 8:30, something urgent has come up that demands immediate attention,” he admitted. “Managing time effectively and properly triaging issues helps ensure that each item is evaluated and executed on a needs-based criteria.”
When it comes to managing multiple tickets, projects, and optimization efforts, organization is key. Matthew’s go-to method? A detailed tracking system in Excel.
“Each row represents a different problem, project, or task that I am working on, and each column contains the latest update on that issue,” he explained. “This allows me to quickly recall where issues were left off and enables complete start-to-finish tracking of what I’m working on.”
It’s a simple yet powerful approach for Matthew that helps maintain clarity and momentum, even on the busiest days.
At the heart of his role is a commitment to reliability and performance - ensuring that systems work seamlessly for those who depend on them.
“The most important thing is ensuring that the systems I am responsible for work consistently and are reliable,” he explained.
By troubleshooting issues, optimizing system performance, and enhancing usability of applications, he helps clinicians and ensures Health Records staff can work more efficiently, ultimately supporting better care across the community.
Outside of work, balance comes from staying organized during the day and fully disconnecting afterward.
“Walking out of the office with a clear plan for the next day helps reduce the mental load that you can carry home,” he shared. “For me, coming home and sharing a good meal with those you love makes everything seem lighter and helps me recharge after a workday.”
When he’s not solving technical challenges, you might find Matthew with a guitar in hand. He said music plays an important role in helping him unwind.
“It gives me a creative outlet to express myself and is a great way to relax after a difficult day.”
Thank you, Matthew, for sharing your career journey and insights we can all relate to! Your dedication, problem-solving mindset, and commitment to supporting healthcare systems for our hospitals make a meaningful difference across our organization.
