Transcending Borders

You may recall that back in February I traveled with a group of pilgrims to Mexico to visit the vast overwintering population of monarch butterflies. What we witnessed was unlike anything I’ve seen. It felt like standing in a New York City tickertape parade, if the shreds of paper were exquisite living creatures and the location was a gorgeous mountain forest.


The monarch butterfly is a remarkable creature. Every year this species makes a 6,000-mile migration across North America, which it accomplishes over the span of five generations. That is to say, the great, great grandchildren of the butterflies I saw in Mexico in February will return to Mexico this coming autumn, after the intermediate generations traveled as far north as Canada. And incredibly, having been born thousands of miles away, and without ever having seen them, those descendants will return to the exact same trees on the exact same mountains of Mexico that their ancestors visited the year before. 


It's so outrageously marvelous that it almost defies comprehension – and indeed, scientists are still studying how it can even be possible. But for we who believe, within those scientific explanations we recognize the imprint of God’s grace and beauty and pure delight. This is a major day of celebration in the life of the Church as we give thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church and all who, at their baptism, are sealed with the Holy Sprit and made Christ's own forever. Outreach Helps Families


The Outreach committee is joining with Vacation Bible School participants to gather items for Vogel Alcove – a Dallas organization focused on helping families dealing with homelessness. We are looking for toddler-sized summer clothing and individual-sized, no-cook food for children, including canned meats with pull tops, individual fruit servings, granola bars, juice boxes, and other non-perishable items. Pick up a list at the outreach table in the Tower Cloister. the Dallas Pride Festival & Parade

Transfiguration will be part of the Dallas Pride Festival on Saturday, June 3 and the Parade on Sunday, June 4. Open Door has reserved a booth in the festival building and a place in the parade.


We need volunteers to represent the Fig in our booth, Saturday, June 3 and we need folks to help spread God’s love in the Parade on Sunday, June 4 at 1:00pm. Use the buttons provided here to volunteer.

EMF Silent Auction & Fish Fry is Back!

After a four year hiatus, Episcopal Men’s Fellowship (EMF) will be hosting its annual Silent Auction and Fish Fry. 


Join us Sunday, June 4, from 4:30-7:30pm for the biggest fundraiser of the year as EMF auctions off items ranging from sporting goods and jewelry to concert tickets and vacation getaways. All proceeds benefit ministries and outreach projects that our church supports. Cost will be $10 per person or $25 per family.

Juneteenth with Living Faith Covenant Church


Join us for our Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 17, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, in Roper Hall. We will welcome Bishop Alex D. Byrd and Pastor Marvin T. Roberts of Living Faith Covenant Church (LFCC) in Dallas, an LGBTQ-affirming church that is part of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries. Our meal will be catered by Off the Bone Barbecue.

Children’s Ministry needs snacks for VBS. Non-perishables may be dropped off at the red phone booth in the Gathering Space between now and June 4. Items that need to be refrigerated may be dropped off on June 4.
