Applying to Private Colleges

Considering Applying to a Private College?

Many private colleges and universities utilize a holistic approach to reviewing prospective transfer applicants. This approach usually considers your academics (e.g. GPA, enrollment, rigor of coursework), and personal qualities.

To learn about your personal qualities, universities may require personal essays and letters of recommendation.

You may consider participating in activities such as student government, volunteer experiences, internships, or work experience to enhance your learning and application materials.

For advice on getting a great letter of recommendation, read here

Meet Kira Romero

In 2019, Kira Romero transferred to Cal Poly Pomona as a Civil Engineering major.

What do you enjoy about your transfer university?

What I enjoy most about Cal Poly Pomona is the shear amount of opportunity that is allotted to their students. Through the organizations that are within the College of Engineering, I have been exposed to several internships, undergraduate design competitions, and leadership opportunities. It has allowed me to experience and grow within my major and make some fantastic friends and future colleagues along the way as Cal Poly students are highly sought after in the engineering field.

What transfer advice would you give to future FC transfer students?

My advice to transfer students is to get involved within campus activities and organizations as quickly as possible. As you are starting off the traditional college experience later than some, it is important to make those connections with your peers and professors to be sure you're setting yourself up for the most opportunities possible when your graduate. It is the best way to secure not only employment after graduation, but also, connections to fall back on if you are struggling to find work.
