URA's Virtual Office Hours are held as 1-on-1 meetings between the student and the selected Research Ambassador via BlueJeans. Research Ambassadors are here to help guide you and figure out your own interests, introduce you to an exclusive list of research positions at the Institute, and email professors.
URA maintains a database of labs interested in having undergrads for this very purpose of helping others start out on the research process. For those already involved in research, we can help with resume edits, applications to PURA and other awards, and practicing for conferences. Stop by Virtual Office Hours to speak to an Ambassador this semester and let us help enhance your educational experience today!
|
|
Are you a transfer student with questions about how to get involved in research? Stop by Transfer Student Office Hours on 9/15 at 5pm! Ambassadors will be present to help answer any questions you may have about research or life at Tech!
|
|
Sign up for a virtual 1:1 session with a recruiter at GE where you will have at least 10 minutes to speak 1:1 with us. We want to provide better options for students besides coming to a career fair and standing in line practicing your elevator pitch only to speak to a recruiter for a few short minutes.
During these sessions, you can book time with us on your own terms to ask us questions and help answer some of yours. When you register prior to your session we will be able to see your resume and the businesses or positions you might be interested in.
To complete your 10-minute timeslot sign up, please email Zach Shaqqo (zach.shaqqo@ge.com) with the subject "GT 1:1 Session" and provide up to 3 times that work for you on 9/15. Zach will follow up with your confirmed time and that will complete your timeslot booking.

"Regenerative Medicine: Current Concepts and Changing Trends"
Patients with diseased or injured organs may be treated with transplanted tissues. There is a sever shortage of donor organs and tissues which is worsening yearly due to the aging population. Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering apply the principles of cell transplantation, material sciences, and bioengineering to construct biological substitutes that may restore and maintain normal function in diseased and injured tissues. 3D bioprinting is being utilized for potential tissue engineering therapies, and Body-on-a-Chip technologies are being applied for drug discovery and personalized medicine.
Anthony Atala, MD, id the G. Link Professor and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the W. Boyce Professor and Chair of Department of Urology at Wake Forest University. His work focuses on growing human cells, tissues, and organs. Fifteen applications of technologies developed in Dr. Atala's laboratory have been used clinically in human patients.

"Engineering Human Tissues for Medical Impact"
Approximately 35 million men and women in the United States suffer from temporomandibular join, or TMJ, problems, and as many as one in four people experience symptoms of TMJ disorders, including pain in the chewing muscles, jaw stiffness, clicking, popping or grating, or the pain of arthritis.
Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic and her research team have been able to grow bone grafts that will math a patient's original jaw bone for facial reconstruction surgery to repair injuries, disease, or birth defects. This spectacular advancement in bone tissue engineering provides all the advantages of the body's original jaw bone. The team used real bone as a scaffold to grow the new TMJ graft.

These awards are available for science and math undergraduates to initiate research under the supervision of a faculty member. The research project is a mutual agreement between the faculty member and the student. The award provides a stipend of $1,500 for approximately 150 hours of research during a semester. The award may be extended to a second semester w approval of the URSA awards committee. Funds are competitively awarded.
Application to participate in this innovative program is open to all College of Sciences undergraduate students who have at least one full academic year until graduation. Applicants should be in good academic standing and committed to participating in an undergraduate research experience.

President's Undergraduate Research Awards fund student salaries to conduct undergraduate research with Georgia Tech faculty and offset travel expenses for undergraduates to present their research at professional conferences. Between two hundred and three hundred competitive awards are offered each year.
Salary Awards offer a $1,500 stipend to undergraduate students who are conducting research with a Georgia Tech faculty member or Georgia Tech Research Institute scientist. Both faculty members and students can initiate research projects, but the award proposal must be written by the student, and the student must apply by the established deadline for the semester in which the funds are requested. Funds are competitively awarded.Co-op students or students with full-time paid internships during a semester may not accept PURA funding during that same semester.
|
|
Undergraduate students whose research has been accepted for presentation at a professional or academic conference may apply for up to $1,000 in PURA Travel Award funding. Multiple travel awards can be granted within the same academic year, and students may receive a travel award during the same semester of salary award funding. Funds are competitively awarded.
At this time, we are only accepting PURA travel award applications for registration to attend virtual conferences. We will not be funding in person travel at this time. Please email allyson.tant@gatech.edu if you have further questions.
