Four Questions with Rachel Smith
Major at NOVA: Liberal Arts
Major at Four-Year School: Elementary Education
What school are you currently attending and why did you choose to go to that school?
After studying at NOVA, I attended Radford University and graduated in May 2018. I chose to attend Radford University because of their reputable teaching program. Radford University offered me exceptional opportunities to become the teacher that I am today. I’m so grateful I chose to study at NOVA initially and then Radford University!
Please tell us why you chose to come to NOVA and about your transfer experience.
I chose to attend NOVA during my senior year of high school. NOVA allowed me to receive college credits for the final two classes I needed to graduate high school. NOVA was extremely accommodating and supportive during my unique academic experience. This educational opportunity was rewarding because I was able to have a flexible class schedule while working multiple jobs. This benefited me financially and professionally, all while taking more advanced and engaging classes. Fortunately, my transfer experience was remarkably smooth and beneficial because I was able to graduate an entire year early!
What is one piece of advice you would give to students looking to transfer?
My biggest piece of advice is to talk to your professors and advisors! They will help you create a plan to ensure your success in transferring. Talk with them as early on as you can to best prepare for your future. Their advice and guidance have stayed with me to this day. They truly value your education and achievement!
What are you currently doing and what are your plans for the future?
I’m currently in my third year of teaching first grade! I utilize a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum because I believe in the importance of equipping my students academically, socially, and emotionally. I absolutely love being a teacher because of the impact I make every day. As a lifelong learner, I would like to pursue my Master's in Education very soon.
