Ft. Benjamin Harrison--a great place for summer exploration
It’s summertime, school is out, and you may be looking for activities to get kids outdoors to enjoy nature. In the northeast Indianapolis area, a trip to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence Township offers everyone a full day of outdoor fun and adventure.
The United States established Fort Benjamin Harrison in 1904. During World War l, the Fort was established for officer training camps and to train medical and engineering specialists. With World War ll, the Fort was used for a variety of purposes, including as a detention center for nearly 425,000 Prisoners of War (POWS) from Italy and Germany. In 1991 the Defense Base Re-Alignment and Closure Act forced the U.S. Congress to close the Fort. The base was converted into Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park offering the community two national historic districts, the former Citizen’s Military Training Camp and the Museum of 20th Century Warfare, as well as an oasis of urban landscape offering year-round escapades.
The 1,700-acre park features six walking and jogging trails, picnic sites, fishing access to Fall Creek, horse trail rides, biking trails, and canoe trips down Fall Creek. For others, enjoy playing the 18-hole golf course, redesigned by Pete Dye. The course is recognized as one of the best public golf courses in Indiana. In the winter Fort Harrison offers cross country skiing and is also known for having one of the biggest sledding hills in the area.
Today, Ft. Harrison lets you experience forests, meadows, wildlife and glimpses of a colorful past that brings Fort Benjamin Harrison to life.
