In order to award scholarships for students effectively, a team of employees at COA work diligently to enable awarding goes smoothly. The COA Foundation office works closely with Financial Aid and the Business Office to identify students and provide accurate data. In the 2018-19 academic year, over $100,000 additional scholarship funds were awarded to students with financial need than the year before. The Foundation is grateful for these dedicated individuals and their efforts to help COA students each and every day.

Highlights and Happenings

New Scholarships Established

The Susan K. Preston Memorial Scholarship: An annual scholarship established by GEM Day Services, Inc. in the Outer Banks. The gift of $5,000 will provide funding for residents of Dare, Currituck and/or Tyrell counties who are enrolled in the Nurse Aide program or who work as a Certified Nurse Aide. Preference will be given to students who plan to work with dementia patients. See here for article.

The Lynn Bryant Scholarship: An annual scholarship established by Outer Banks Hotline. The scholarship, funded with a gift of $3,000, will provide emergency funding for a student enrolled in any program of study at any of COA's campuses who is in need of, or has received, crisis intervention services. The Albemarle Soil & Water Conservation District recently donated $4,000 to begin a new schoalrship for the Agribusiness Technology program. Students enrolled full-time in the Agribusiness program and a resident of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Pasquotank or Perquimans County are encouraged to apply. The Candis R. Richardson Memorial Scholarship: Established by Twiddy & Company Realtors with a gift of $2,000, this annual scholarship will benefit a COA student enrolled in courses with a strong emphasis on business, management, analytics and/or entrepreneurship, while maintaining a 3.0 GPA. The formal signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Dare County and College of The Albemarle (COA), solidifying $250,000 in scholarship support for the  Dare County Guarantee Scholarship Program , was held September 3, 2019. Click here for information on how to apply.

COA's 11th President: Dr. Jack Bagwell

On September 20, the Board of Trustees named Dr. Jack Bagwell the 11th President of College of The Albemarle. Dr. Bagwell brings to COA nearly 28 years of experience in the community college setting. Dr. Bagwell takes the reins December 2nd. To read more about Dr. Bagwell, click here .

College of The Albemarle Foundation disbursed $368,000 for scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year and raised $546,000 through pledges, in-kind gifts and property donations.
