Dear Community,

As part of our summer fundraising drive, we are lifting up stories of transformation. One of the most transformative way that IM4HI organizes for justice is through pilgrimage: gathering people to sojourn together to places of significance to shine a light on the suffering and the ways that we are all connected as human beings.

In April, faith and community leaders from Southern and Northern California undertook a two-day pilgrimage to the Calexico/Mexicali Border. We visited a shelter in Mexicali, Mexico to offer support to people seeking asylum, conducted a prayer service for the liberation of those detained in front of Imperial Regional Detention Facility, and ended with a prayer service at the Holtville cemetery in recognition of unnamed immigrants who did not survive the desert crossing.

As a result of the Border Experience Pilgrimage, we strengthened relationships with people of faith assisting migrants in the Imperial Valley and Calexico, offered emotional support to people on the inside, won media attention, and deepened our collective resolve to end the racism, exclusion and detention that separate families and cause deep suffering.

This fall, we will be conducting two pilgrimages: one focused on Black reparations through a spiritual journey to Allensworth and the other, our second pilgrimage to the remaining immigration detention centers across the state.

Pilgrimage is an act of witness, unity, sacred memory, and a commitment to a new way forward.
