Dear Community,

As part of our summer fundraising drive, we lift up powerful stories of hope and resilience. Transforming leaders is a core part of the way we make change. We believe that in order to change carceral and immigration systems, we need the leadership of those who have been directly impacted by these harms who have the solutions for the future.

Today we lift up Maria Legarda whom we have accompanied and who has blessed us. Maria, a community and faith leader, is a Filipina immigrant impacted by both the carceral and immigration systems. She is finishing her term as IM4HI's Spiritual Activist in Residence and is now joining our new Faith Advocates Cohort. In her moving testimony at the Interfaith Vigil for Remembrance in February, Maria shared:

“Looking past our convictions and seeing us as mothers, daughters, sisters, human beings capable of change can help bring back and restore our self-worth and dignity and ignite that hope, that small glimmer of hope inside each and every one of us....As faith communities, it is our duty to uphold them - their well-being - and remind them that every person, even behind bars, is sacred and worthy.”

As outlined in IM4HI's new strategic plan, with your support we are developing a multiracial, multigenerational, and multifaith leadership circle of 100 directly-impacted individuals, faith leaders, and younger activisits who consider IM4HI to be their organizing home.

Your support invests in directly impacted leaders like Maria who are developing their gifts to powerfully end the harms of incarceration and detention. Will you contribute $60 or $100 to support this work of transforming leaders?

In solidarity,

Rev. Deborah Lee and Gala King
