The heart transforms when it moves beyond the limitations of the ego identity.
The mind can create a kind of prison around the heart, using its stories, limiting beliefs, fears, and personas to maintain a sense of control. When we identify too strongly with these mental patterns, the ego can imprison the soul.
But you have everything you need within you to liberate your soul.
Your ego is a constructed identity. Your soul is your true identity. Since the soul expresses itself through the heart and the ego primarily operates through the mind, transformation begins when we soften the conflict between the heart and the mind.
A relationship with another person can reveal which one is leading your life.
Are you living from your soul, with your ego as a companion? Or are you living from your ego, with your soul as a prisoner?
Freeing your soul transforms your heart and your relationships.
A Soulful Connection
When I was dating Michael in my early 40s, I asked for a sign that he was the right person for me.
I hadn't done very well choosing men who were good for me in the past, and I knew I needed to trust something greater than my own limited perspective.
At the time, we were living in Hawaii, and we were looking forward to a meteor shower that was supposed to be visible one night.
I lived on the beach, so Michael came over and we went outside to sit on the sand and watch the cosmic show. But when we looked up, the sky was completely overcast.
Michael was disappointed. There was no way we were going to see the meteor shower through all those clouds.
Then I noticed a small opening in the sky. I suggested that we focus on that opening and imagine it getting bigger and bigger until the clouds cleared. Michael laughed at my suggestion. There was no wind, he pointed out, so it was impossible that the clouds would simply disappear.
I said, “Let's do it anyway!”
I set my intention and began focusing on the sky clearing. Then I asked Michael if he was doing the same. He said, “Oh, you weren't kidding! Okay... I'll play along.”
Silently, I asked the universe for a sign.
If this is the man I'm meant to be with, let us clear the sky together so we can see the meteor shower.
Within about ten minutes, the sky was completely clear. And we witnessed the most amazing meteor shower of our lives.
We both agreed that it was a miracle. And I had my answer.
My lack of trust in myself in relationships had led me to ask for guidance. I wasn't looking for an ordinary answer. I was asking for a clear sign—a miracle. And I got one.
My ego could have dismissed the experience as coincidence. It could have told me that clouds simply move and that the meteor shower had nothing to do with my question.
But my soul guided me to experience it differently. I chose to see it as a meaningful response from the universe. More importantly, that experience taught me something about respect.
I respected myself enough to share my unusual intention with Michael instead of hiding it or worrying about what he might think. And he respected me enough to join me. That mattered a great deal.
This soulful connection opened us to something greater.
Respect Transforms the Heart
When you're living with an open heart, there is an invitation for mutual respect.
You care about your own feelings, and you care about the feelings of the other person.
In a heart-centered relationship, both people have an opportunity to relate from their souls rather than simply from their egos.
When we live primarily from the mind, we can lose touch with the heart. The ego becomes more concerned with being right, being safe, being validated, or maintaining control than with understanding what we and the other person are actually feeling.
The other person can become little more than a reflection of our own fears and limited perspective. This creates relationships in which both people are either getting triggered or trying to feel better about themselves rather than genuinely connecting with one another.
The heart offers another possibility.
It invites us to listen. To feel. To respect. To love. And to recognize the soul within ourselves and the soul within another person.
Love Is Transformational
Self-abandonment occurs when the ego takes over and the soul is ignored.
We abandon ourselves when we stop listening to what we feel, override our inner knowing, silence our needs, or give away our power in order to maintain a relationship.
But self-abandonment can also become a doorway.
When the pain of abandoning ourselves becomes greater than our willingness to continue living that way, we can begin to return to love.
We start paying attention to our feelings and emotions—the language of the soul.
We honor our heart's desires because we respect ourselves enough to listen.
Love is transformational because it brings us home to ourselves. It isn't about choosing the soul over the ego. It's about creating harmony between them.
The ego can learn to love the soul self. And the soul can lovingly guide the ego self.
When the ego identifies with the soul more than with its false identities, it no longer has to be in control of everything. It can relax, let go of fear, participate, and enjoy the experience of being alive.
The soul takes the lead. The ego becomes the companion. And the heart becomes free to choose love. It's a balance of being human and being spiritual. And we learn to accept our own shadow as well as our own light.
Opening your heart and soul to a relationship is a source of transformation. It takes you beyond the form of your ego and allows you to identify with your true self. It may even cause miracles.
Reflection
Would you trust a cosmic message from the Universe?
Does your ego try to convince you that it needs to be in control?
Do you feel respected in your relationships?
Do you respect yourself?
Do you feel loved in your relationships?
Do you love yourself?
Perhaps the most transformational question isn't “Does this person love me?”
Perhaps it is: “Am I loving and respecting myself as I move through this relationship?”
Your answer may reveal where your heart is asking you to transform.
