Dear Friends,

Transgender Americans face another attack in federal civil rights.

A proposed change to Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) anti-discrimination Section 1557 was introduced by the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) of Department of Health and Human Services (DHS), which administers the ACA. The group Justice in Aging says proposed rule “rolls back” protections and “attempts to radically limit the way that victims of any type of discrimination can seek redress under the law .” This is a warning to all of us.

To learn more about how the proposed rule could change practices, read my article on THCC's website .

Also on THCC's website, is a report published in partnership with PFLAG Nashville, Care and Caring: The Affordable Care Act, Health Coverage, and LGBT Tennesseans . This report emphasizes how essential preserving the health care protections and civil rights advances contained within the ACA is.

Act Now

Kaiser Family Foundation points out that DHS wants input on other aspects of civil rights coverage: “As a result, if finalized, any changes to the Section 1557 regulations could be a first step toward restricting nondiscrimination protections in other civil rights regulations [Read Title VI, Title IX, and Section 504].”

Please submit comments by the end of July expressing how this proposed rule would hurt you and/or the people you care about.
