Mass Ave. Improvements - Dudley St. to Beech St., Roseland St. to Waterhouse St.
In November, the City installed separated bike lanes and dedicated bus lanes on Mass Ave north of Dudley Street. The Arlington-bound dedicated bus lanes are in operation all day every day and the Harvard-bound dedicated bus lanes are in operation from 10PM to 9AM every day. During other times of day, people may use the Harvard-bound bus lane for loading. The City installed this project in order to meet the requirements of the Cycling Safety Ordinance and with the goal to improve travel times for bus riders on Route 77.
The MassAve4 Cycling Safety Ordinance Project introduction video is available to view. This video focuses on the segments of Massachusetts Avenue between Dudley St. and Beech St. and Roseland St. to Waterhouse St. This video highlights:
  • Where the City is in the process of evaluating the MassAve4 segments
  • The project timeline as it relates to the Cycling Safety Ordinance requirements
  • The range of design possibilities
  • How to provide feedback to the project team
Community input is extremely valuable as the team works to develop a recommended implementation strategy and schedule to send to the City Council in April 2022. Survey responses will be accepted through November 30, 2021.
Alewife Route 2 Off-Ramp Bus Lane
In November, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) installed a bus queue jump lane on the Route 2 off-ramp to the MBTA Alewife station. This dedicated bus queue jump lane is in operation all day every day. A bus queue jump lane lets buses and shuttles pass queued cars on the ramp and makes buses and shuttles more reliable for riders. MBTA Bus Routes 62, 67, and 76, Alewife TMA shuttles, and 128 Business Council shuttles can use this lane.
