MBTA accessibility information
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has not closed any elevator or escalator, in Cambridge, at the time of writing.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently published videos highlighting features, improvements, and policies for accessibility. All videos are voiced and subtitled in English. Some videos have versions with American Sign Language interpretation, Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin Chinese.

Upcoming subway detours and bus shuttles in June
The MBTA will replace parts of the MBTA rapid transit network and commuter rail lines with accessible bus shuttles in June 2023. During rail-replacement bus shuttles, the MBTA will be doing track, power, and signal upgrades and repairs. Much of this work will help reduce speed restrictions and slow zones.

Plan your transit trips with extra travel time or consider using different subway and bus routes.

Red Line shuttles on weekday evenings
The MBTA will run accessible buses between JFK/UMass and North Quincy to replace the Red Line on weekdays after 8:45 p.m. on these evenings:
  • Tuesday May 30 to Thursday June 1
  • Monday June 5 to Thursday June 8

Green Line shuttles on weekends
The MBTA will run accessible shuttle buses between Government Center and Medford/Tufts station via Union Square all day on these weekends in June:
  • June 3-4
  • June 10-11

On these weekends, Green Line branch trains from the west will run between these stations:
  • B Branch - Boston College to Park Street
  • C Branch - Cleveland Circle to Park Street
  • D Branch - Riverside to Government Center
  • E Branch - Heath St/VA Medical center to Government Center

Green Line-replacement bus shuttles will have one route that make the following stops:
  • Medford/Tufts
  • Ball Square
  • Magoun Square
  • Gilman Square
  • East Somerville
  • Union Square
  • Lechmere
  • Science Park/West End
  • North Station
  • Haymarket (only for buses going to Government Center)
  • Government Center

Green Line - Haymarket station closure for 2 weeks
The MBTA will close the Haymarket station from Monday June 12 to Sunday June 25. The MBTA will:
  • have riders walk between North Station, Haymarket, and Government Center
  • have riders transfer to Orange Line trains between North Station and State/Government Center or Downtown Crossing/Park Street while skipping Haymarket station
  • run accessibility vans for connections between North Station, Haymarket, and Government Center

During these two weeks, Green Line trains from the north will run between Union Square and North Station and Medford/Tufts and North station. Green Line trains from the west will run to Park Street or Government Center.

Other detours and diversions
In June, the MBTA will also replace with buses or detour the following rapid transit and commuter rail lines:
  • Orange Line
  • Fairmount Line
  • Lowell Line
  • Kingston, Middleborough, and Greenbush (Old Colony) Lines
New schedules on Commuter Rail and Subway/Bus
Commuter Rail began running on new schedules on Monday, May 22, 2023
The MBTA has new commuter rail schedules that began on May 22, 2023. The schedules have minor changes and maintain regular arrival times every hour.

On the Fitchburg Line at Porter Square trains arrive:
  • On weekdays, once an hour from 5:40 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • On weekends, about once every 2 hours from 6:20 a.m. to 11:05 p.m.

Other commuter rail lines have trains that come more often. Visit MBTA.com/CR for schedules for commuter rail lines.
MBTA to run new schedules on Sunday July 2, 2023
The MBTA announced that they will be adjusting all bus schedules beginning Sunday, July 2, 2023. The MBTA will reduce scheduled trips on many bus routes, but expects better reliability with the new schedules. The MBTA shared the following brief explanation on why this change means buses will run more reliably.

Today, the MBTA bus schedules do not match the number of bus drivers that work for them. This means that the MBTA does not run all the scheduled trips in a day. Because the MBTA prioritizes running trips on infrequent bus routes, there are more 'dropped' trips on bus routes with frequent service, such as the 1, 66, 71/73, and 77. This results in uneven and unreliable service.

The new schedules, which the MBTA is drafting now, will better match the number of bus drivers. The MBTA expects to cancel less trips throughout the bus network, especially on frequent bus routes. Because of this change, the MBTA expects that you will see more evenly spaced buses and more reliable trips starting on July 2.

The MBTA also shared that they are working hiring more bus operators, making the job more attractive and rewarding, and hope to keep operatings working for the MBTA.

In June, the MBTA will host virtual meetings with remote participation for providing more information.
