Weekend Red Line-Replacement Bus Shuttles for Signal Upgrades
The MBTA is installing new digital train signal system on the Red Line. A new digital train signal system means more reliable service for riders and easier troubleshooting and maintenance for MBTA workers. This work is part of the MBTA's Red Line Transformation Program.

As a result of this installation, the MBTA needs to run tests over several weekends on the Red Line between Alewife and Harvard stations. This means that bus shuttles will replace subway service on these dates:
  • October 30-31
  • November 13-14
Rail-Replacement Buses on Weekends on Fitchburg Line through December 2021
On weekends through December 2021, the MBTA Commuter Rail will replace train service with bus shuttles between Littleton/495 station and Wachusett station. This rail-replacement bus shuttle is required as a result of a project to install train safety systems on the Fitchburg line.
