Summit Session: Transit-oriented development


Among the housing-related legislation passed by the Province in fall 2023 was Bill 47 which will legislate minimum density requirements around designated transit hubs. In a session at the 2024 UBCM Housing Summit, representatives from three BC cities with significant transit hubs will examine the implications of the bill. Read more.

Engagement session for local governments on proposed Land Act amendments


The provincial government is proposing amendments to the Land Act to enable shared decision-making with Indigenous Governing Bodies, in keeping with Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) agreements. UBCM met with provincial staff last week and requested the Province hold an engagement session for local governments to learn more about these amendments.


This is being held February 21, and written feedback can be submitted to the Province until March 31.

BC’s population growth at

highest rate since the 1970s


A report prepared by BC Stats shows that British Columbia’s population growth rate has surged over the past three years due to higher national immigration targets. Nearly 150,800 migrants came to the province in 2022, roughly 52,000 of whom were permanent immigrants. In 2023 the population of BC experienced an annual growth rate above 3%, marking the highest annual increase since the 1970s.
