Dear Friend and Neighbor,
Yesterday I wrote you about the need to recapture the spirit that Martin Luther King used to accomplish so much for humanity. Today I want to propose how we use this spirit today.
What we ultimately need to make a brighter future for all is to close the many gaps that exist throughout our society and across this country. We must make more equal, educational opportunity; foster a criminal justice system that is truly indiscriminate; and fight for equal access to services like healthcare and quality housing.
To begin, we must start to talk about the challenges we face: a society deeply seated with a troubled past, of racism, sexism and discrimination across various divisions, that has left the landscape of America today, riddled with inequalities. We must come to grips with that fact that from redlining to gerrymandering, government has in the past aimed to disenfranchise and degrade the voices of many who were different.
Acknowledging these truths and discussing ways to overcome them--how to use government as a force for good--so that every child, regardless of zipcode, has the full ability to excel. It means having the difficult conversations about race in America, especially after many preconceived notions were shattered over the past year. It remains clear that much work must be done and we must begin that work today.
I hope that in the coming year, you will be an active participant in these conversations. I hope that you will work side by side with me and so many eager to see positive change in America, and build a brighter future together.

Ayer les escribí sobre la necesidad de recapturar el espíritu que. Hoy deseo proponerle como utilicemos el espíritu, que utilizó Martin Luther King para lograr tánto para la humanidad, en este día.
Lo que en última instancia necesitamos para hacer un futuro más brillante para todos es cerrar las muchas lagunas que existen en toda nuestra sociedad, y a todo lo largo de este país. Debemos lograr más igualdad de oportunidades en la educación; fomentar un sistema de justicia penal que sea verdaderamente indiscriminado; y luchar por el acceso igualitario a servicios como la atención médica y la vivienda de calidad.
Para iniciar, debemos empezar a hablar de los desafíos que enfrentamos: una sociedad profundamente arraigada con un turbulento pasado, de racismo, sexismo y discriminación a través de varias divisiones, que han dejado el paisaje de lo Estados Unidos de hoy dia, plagado de desigualdades. Debemos abordar el hecho de que, desde la redifusión hasta la manipulacion, el gobierno ha pretendido en el pasado desautorizar y degradar las voces de muchos quienes eran diferentes.
Reconocer estas verdades y discutir maneras de superarlas - cómo usar el gobierno como una fuerza para el bien - de manera que cada nino, independientemente de su código postal, tenga la capacidad de sobresalir. Significa tener las conversaciones difíciles sobre la raza en Estados Unidos, especialmente después de que muchas nociones preconcebidas se rompieron durante el año pasado. Queda claro que hay mucho trabajo por hacer y debemos comenzar ese trabajo hoy.
Espero que en el próximo año, usted será un activo participante en estas conversaciones. Espero que trabajen lado a lado conmigo, y con tántos quienes están deseosos de ver un cambio positivo en Estados Unidos, y juntos construir un futuro más brillante.
