JANUARY CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION
Beginning January 2023, residents can place their live Christmas trees at the curb on their regular sanitation day for pickup at no additional cost!

In February, you will need to attach a yard waste sticker to your tree when placing it for collection. So Don't Wait!

  • Please make sure to remove all decorations and lights.
  • There is no need to wrap the tree in a plastic bag.
  • Please don't place your tree too close to bushes in the yard, which makes it easy to miss.
HOLIDAY RECYCLING TIPS
In a few weeks, many will be struggling with the post-holiday mess. After the gifts are given and unwrapped, and the decorations are taken down, there will be an avalanche of clutter that takes over living rooms and tables. According to Stanford University, the holiday season in the U.S. results in an extra 25 million tons of garbage.

Make sure you’re prepared to tackle this mess by getting the entire family involved in sorting, recycling, and cleaning up. Here are six tips to help clear the way for a new, mess-free year.

  1. Categorize holiday items. Create a sorting station in your home and ask the entire family to help sort and categorize the items that need to be cleaned up. Sort items by categories like plastic, cardboard boxes, paper boxes with plastic windows, wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, and packaging materials.
  2. Once items are categorized, assign every family member a category (or two!) as their zone. Use the waste wizard on the Sanitation Page of our website to find out what you can recycle or download the Kirkwood Recycles App.
  3. Determine what can be recycled in each category. Put on your favorite family playlist and jam out while each person sorts through their category to find recyclable items.
  4. Separate recyclables from non-recyclables. Set aside the sorted recyclable items. Pause to properly break down any boxes (remove plastic windows from boxes before recycling), remove gift tags from recyclable wrapping paper, and make sure everything is empty, clean, and dry. Put your recyclables in your recycling cart – remember not to bundle them in a bag or box. Now – you should just have non-recyclables.
  5. Save reusable items for next year. Send everyone back to their zone and crank up the music. Now that the recyclables have been properly sorted, you can look through what’s left and determine if you can reuse any of the items that you couldn’t recycle. Items like foam packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and gift bags that are coated, laminated, or dyed can be reused. Remember not all wrapping paper is recyclable. Metallic wrapping paper can’t be recycled, but it can be reused for fun, family crafts. Get inspired here.
  6. Take out the garbage. Finally! Everything that is left can be placed in your garbage bin.

Cleaning up after the holidays can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Getting the whole family involved helps make it easier to clean up the holiday explosion. This is a great way to spend time together and to learn some great recycling habits.
BOOKMARK KIRKWOOD ELECTRIC'S
NEW OUTAGE MAP
Kirkwood Electric has implemented upgrades to the Outage Map to increase its performance and end-user (THAT'S YOU!) experience.

The upgrade is designed to address the response time of the application, and the accuracy of information provided, and reduce downtime.

Kirkwood Electric is working hard to improve our communication with our customers and address their needs. We expect these improvements to be a big help to our customers, and your power delivery team.

Customers can access the new outage map on our website at www.kirkwoodelectric.org or you may bookmark www.kirkwoodmo.org/OutageMap.
PCs FOR PEOPLE AT KIRKWOOD LIBRARY
Why recycle your old electronics? There are lots of reasons! Electronic gadgets are made with metals that erode and release harmful toxins. Keeping these out of landfills minimizes that pollution. Metals can often be separated and dealt with in a more environmentally responsible manner. Reusing metals means less need to be extracted through mining, which is expensive, and also environmentally damaging. Even more important, your old electronic items may still have useful life. Your old phone or computer may be perfect for someone with different needs. PCs for people will refurbish your old equipment and match it up with someone who needs digital access. Please take advantage of the PCs for People recycle bin at Kirkwood Public Library through January 31, 2023.
GARDENING TIP FOR THE MONTH
Look toward your yard for materials you can use for holiday decorating. Pine cones, pieces of holly, twigs of evergreens, and dried flowers or leaves. Items can be used with fresh cut flowers, in wreaths, for place cards at the table, etc.

If you purchase a live Christmas tree (with a root ball) don't keep it in the house more than a few days. Have the outdoor location prepared for a quick transition. Dig a hole three times the width of the root ball, but only 75-80 percent as deep as the root ball. When the tree is positioned in the hole, cut away/remove the covering on the root ball. Backfill with soil and water well.

When purchasing a cut tree, get a fresh cut on the bottom of the trunk. As soon as possible put the trunk in a bucket of water. While you have the tree make sure it has water daily! You may find that pets will drink the water from the tree stand/bucket.

Whatever type of tree or decorations you use take great care around lit candles and fireplaces to avoid fires

The soil has cooled, but is not frozen. If you still have spring blooming bulbs to plant do so as soon as possible in case we have a cold snap. Water trees and shrubs that have been planted in the last two years. This will help keep their roots hydrated through the winter.

IMPORTANT SANITATION REMINDERS

Sanitation Service: Kirkwood Sanitation picks up recycling, trash and yard waste on your regularly scheduled collection day. You should place your carts at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day and leave them out until emptied. If a pickup is missed, you may call 314-822-5828 or email [email protected] and sanitation staff will pick up your items after the completion of the regular route.

Trash Cart Placement: Don't forget to leave three feet between your trash cart and anything else you place curbside - your recycling cart, as well as all yard waste bags. You also need to leave three feet between trash/recycling carts and any other items on the street, such as parked cars, mailboxes, etc. Leaving three feet of space allows the truck's automated arm adequate space to access your cart(s).

Recycling Carts: Please do not place boxes of recyclables inside your green recycling cart, as boxes (even flattened ones) may get stuck in the bottom of the cart. Recyclables should be placed loosely inside your carts. Please cut flattened boxes down if you think they may get lodged in the bottom of the cart. Residents may also dispose of recyclables 24/7 at the Francis Scheidegger Recycling Depository located at 350 S Taylor Avenue.

Yard Waste: When placing out yard waste for collection, you must use Kirkwood Yard Waste bags. If you have non-Kirkwood yard waste bags, they must have a Kirkwood Yard Waste Sticker affixed to each bag. Stickers and bags are available for purchase at Kirkwood City Hall and local area retailers. At City Hall, a pack of 5 bags costs $12.27 and stickers are $2.00 each. Pricing varies at local retailers.
