UPCOMING SANITATION HOLIDAY
IMPORTANT SANITATION REMINDERS
As warmer weather begins to set in across the region and many residents begin doing yard work and spring cleaning, we wanted to pass along a few important sanitation reminders to help ensure your sanitation collection is simple and seamless!

Important Sanitation Reminders:

  • Please ensure all bags for trash collection are placed inside your black trash cart. Bags left outside your trash cart will not be picked up. If you would like an additional trash cart, one can be added to your sanitation account for a fee of $15 a month. Contact Kim Allen in the Sanitation Department at 314-822-5828 or email [email protected] if you would like to receive an additional trash cart.

  • Please do not place boxes of recyclables inside your green recycling cart, as boxes (even flattened ones) may get stuck in the bottom of the cart. Recyclables should be placed loosely inside your carts. Please cut flattened boxes down if you think they may get lodged in the bottom of the cart. Residents may also dispose of recyclables 24/7 at the Francis Scheidegger Recycling Depository located at 350 S Taylor Avenue.

  • Remember when placing out yard waste for collection, you must use Kirkwood Yard Waste bags. If you have non-Kirkwood yard waste bags, they must have a Kirkwood Yard Waste Sticker affixed to each bag. Stickers and bags are available for purchase at Kirkwood City Hall and local area retailers. At City Hall, a pack of 5 bags costs $12.27 and stickers are $2.00 each. Pricing varies at local retailers.
UPDATE: GEYER ROAD CLOSURE
FOR WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT
The City’s waterline replacement project along Geyer has encountered unforeseen conditions along Phase 1A, the area highlighted in yellow in the image below, between Nirk Ave. and Monroe Pl. with the installation of water mains beneath Geyer’s railroad tracks. These unforeseen conditions required the redesign of our replacement plan, which is currently under review by Union Pacific Railroad Company.

Once approved, our contractor will resume work at the railroad track intersection of Geyer Rd. to complete Phase 1A.
Phase 1A requires a temporary road closure for Geyer’s northbound and southbound traffic. Northbound Geyer traffic will be detoured at W. Woodbine. Southbound Geyer traffic will be detoured at W. Argonne. Detour signs along S. Harrison will lead both northbound and southbound traffic back to Geyer. Due to the required size of the excavation in the road, the road closure will remain in place until the scheduled work is complete.

Please follow the posted detour routes. Our Water Department will provide an update on this road closure bi-weekly to keep the public informed.

For the most recent road closure information, please visit www.kirkwoodmo.org/ActiveProjects. If you have any questions please contact Water Superintendent Clarence Patterson.

AMEREN MISSOURI CLEAN SLATE PROGRAM
If you are an Ameren Missouri customer in Kirkwood or the surrounding area we wanted to give you information about Ameren's Clean Slate Electric & Gas Program.

Ameren Missouri created the Clean Slate Electric and Gas Program to help eligible customers clear their past-due balances and start fresh. There are families struggling and in need of utility assistance who don't qualify for many existing federal and state programs and Clean Slate helps fill that gap.

In addition to eligible electric customers (Households making up to $79,500 for a family of four are eligible to apply), the program has recently been expanded to include eligible gas customers.

We encourage eligible customers to apply while funds are still available!

For more information on eligibility and how to apply, please visit Clean Slate Electric and Gas Program or call Ameren Missouri at
1-800-552-7583.
RFID TECHNOLOGY SAVES YOU TIME
At YOUR Kirkwood Public Library
RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification. We have added RFID tags to materials to make checkouts easier for patrons!

The self-check machines can check out a handful of items at a time! Just place items on the pad and the machine reads the tags placed in the books. No more scanning each item individually. All of the library consortium members are using RFID and tagging their items. We hope this will speed up tasks like check outs, check-ins and inventory. Saving time at checkout gives us all the opportunity to do things that are more important.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

GARDENING TIP FOR THE MONTH
Thank you to everyone attending the Kirkwood Garden Club plant sale!

Over $650 was raised to fund a scholarship for a horticulture student!

May is the time for the final application of fertilizer for acid loving plants (hollies, azaleas, etc.).

It is also time to do a light pruning of spring blooming shrubs. With the hot and dry weather we've been having a severe pruning could be very damaging.

Keep your newly planted materials well watered. This is especially necessary on windy days.

I want to thank Kirkwood paramedics for coming to my rescue recently. As gardeners, we are often dirty and dealing with sharp tools. That was my case and I ended up with a deep cut in my leg. I was able to call 911 because I had my cell phone in my pocket. The paramedics arrived quickly, assessed the situation, got the bleeding under control, and got me inside. Their demeanor and knowledgeable approach kept me calm and reduced my embarrassment. They identified what the next steps should be to address my injury.

As gardeners we need to be aware accidents can and do happen. When working in your yard, have a cell phone or portable phone with you. If that isn't possible try and have someone available who can check on you. I'm embarrassed to admit I was attacked by a window box that was sitting on the ground! The paramedics reminded me accidents don't normally happen when we are clean, and well dressed. They didn't laugh at my predicament, they just took care of me and even got me to laugh a few times. It remains to be seen how much laughing I will do when I get the stitches removed.

DOWNLOAD THE KIRKWOOD RECYCLES
APP TODAY!
Tell your friends and neighbors to download the Kirkwood Recycles app, so they can use the waste wizard, play the waste sorting game, submit support requests and receive push notifications notifying them about holiday collection schedules.

This has been made possible thanks to a Grant from the St Louis County Department of Public Health. Residents can download Kirkwood Recycles, available for free in the Google Play store and iPhone App Store

If you would like to make an item suggestion to be added to the waste wizard please email [email protected].

Let’s Recycle Right to keep recyclables clean and our community green!
Kirkwood has over 9,000 residential customers, but only 741 are signed up to receive sanitation reminders.

Earlier this year, residents on Wednesday & Thursday routes who signed up for sanitation reminders were notified instantly of the change in their sanitation pickup via push notification, email or text message.

It's up to you to choose how you are notified!

Use our Sanitation Waste Wizard or Download the Kirkwood Recycles App and NEVER MISS A PICKUP DAY AGAIN!

Visit Kirkwoodmo.org/trash and sign up to receive sanitation reminders in your email, on your smartphone, or add YOUR sanitation schedule to your own calendar!

Follow the instructions in the photo below to get started!
SANITATION REMINDERS

Sanitation Service: Kirkwood Sanitation picks up recycling, trash and yard waste on your regularly scheduled collection day. You should place your carts at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your scheduled day and leave them out until emptied. If a pickup is missed, you may call 314-822-5828 or email [email protected] and sanitation staff will pick up your items after the completion of the regular route.

Trash Cart Placement: Don't forget to leave three feet between your trash cart and anything else you place curbside - your recycling cart as well as all yard waste bags. You also need to leave three feet between trash/recycling carts and any other items on the street, such as parked cars, mail boxes, etc. Leaving three feet of space allows the truck's automated arm adequate space to access your cart(s).
