Hello Everyone & Happy Summer!
At Pond Mountain Inn, enjoy the pleasantly languid start to each day, then let adventures still unwritten take you further… We plan fascinating one-of-a-kind experiences according to the pleasure of our guests, but it’s those days when serendipity intervenes that create the most poignant and joyful memories. Have a great rest of the summer!
All our best – Kay & Glenn

One of our frequent guests once remarked, “The drive is as exciting as the destination itself. It’s amazing what you stumble upon along the way!” We are definitely Travel Done Differently… offering a curated collection of day-trips and itineraries that Vermont visitors may never experience. It's magical here!

This satisfying bear video was taken in our friend’s backyard in Dorset, Vermont. Last week, one of our guests saw a cub cross the road less than a quarter mile away! And, several years ago a persistent black bear raided our neighbor’s garage on three separate nights to feast on thirty pounds of bird food.

Sadly, no, this Bull moose photograph was taken in at Glacier National Park. That said, there are fewer than 3,000 moose in Vermont—mostly in the Northeast Kingdom, but occasionally we see them in our part of Vermont. The bad news, many of our moose are in bad shape as a result of ticks and other parasites.

Peter Huntoon in the Wild...
Peter is native Vermonter with a lifelong passion for art, which is abundantly evident in his work. We love visiting his studio—just ten minutes away, Peter is incredibly gracious sharing his time with us and our guests. Peter’s "A Day in Vermont", is a weekly email “love letter” that celebrates the beauty of Vermont, one painting at a time. Peter shares his authentic artistic adventure with over 10,000 subscribers from across the country and around the world. And, it's free to subscribe at ADayinVermont.com.

Kay's Version of "Green Acres"
Occasionally, we are asked to watch our neighbor’s livestock—chickens, pigs and cows. Which means that we must feed and water the animals twice each day. On this day, the other neighbor and brother, captured Kay with an artful display of feed containers, and couldn’t resist creating this Green Acres comparison—Armann, also created a more authentic black and white picture! What’s particularly timely is that Kay has recently found great amusement with Green Acres and Arnold Ziffel—Arnold was the only cast member to win an acting award.

The Jefferson Memorial and Vermont…
Dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in April, 1943. This Founding Father, Revolutionary, Renaissance Man was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence and first Secretary of State. What makes “The Memorial” so special to Vermonters is the memorial is constructed of white Imperial Danby marble from Vermont that rests upon a series of granite and marble-stepped terraces. The Vermont Danby quarry is the largest underground marble quarry in the world. Danby is just twenty minutes from the inn. Photo by Carol Highsmith

The Parking Lot... Our First Visit
|
On this Sunday, I took our guests to Rathbun's for breakfast—the most interesting place for a country breakfast! The Rathbun family has been producing maple syrup for over eight generations. Early generations produced maple syrup for their friends and family until 1961 when Bill and Nancy Rathbun, with the help of Bill’s father Art, decided to produce maple syrup commercially and open the sugarhouse to the public...

On Sundays, we are now giving our guests a $25.00 gift certificate to experience this fascinating step-back in time country breakfast restaurant. Dine inside or out—you’ll be mesmerized by all the farm implements and the beautiful vintage John Deere and 1959 Massey Ferguson trackers. Open year-round, only on weekends, this is just a wonderful breakfast experience! Ask for either Matt or Wendy, they’re the owners!

Another Lake George connection… Since its founding in 1975 on the shores of Lake George, New York, The Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. James Beard Award Winner...
|
When was the last time that you drove two hours for Thai food? The answer is, last week, for lunch, together with our neighbors. The next question is, why? We had to go after learning that the Winner of the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the northeast, was Nisachon Morgan, co-owner of Saap Restaurant, located in Randolph, Vermont. Lunch, as you would expect, was extraordinary, and it was a beautiful summer drive.

Live bird programs are an unforgettable experience—watching and learning about raptors in flight is fascinating. Raptor enclosures offer a unique opportunity to get up close to eagles, falcons, owls and more! The $1.7 million Forest Canopy Walk offers views from as high as fifty feet above the forest floor, but wait until you experience "The Tree House." The 47-acre property has something for everyone!

The Vermont State Fair • August 16-20
The Vermont State Fair is an agricultural fair managed by The Rutland County Agricultural Society. The first Vermont State Fair took place in 1846, making it one of the oldest state fairs in the United States.
We just love this photograph of a barker at the grounds of the Vermont State Fair in Rutland, September 1941. We’ve never been to any state fair and we were looking forward to attending this year!
