Hello!

With summertime officially behind us, hopefully we can look back at the opportunities it brought for travel. Maybe an annual family vacation, a road trip to your child's college, or a flight overseas, such destinations offer us new sights, activities, and perhaps design inspiration!

In August, I found myself in Sarasota, FL to move my youngest who recently started dancing with the Sarasota Ballet. If I had to pick three elements to sum up the essence of Floridian décor, I'd say tropical prints, foliage, and bright colors! Our family toured the Ringling Museum (the circus family established winter headquarters in Sarasota, leaving much of their history behind) and the Ca' d'Zan, John and Mable's bayside home. Opulent patterns and rich colors filled the mansion and clothed mannequins sporting circus costumes. Catch a glimpse of our visit in this month's "Did You Know."

We may find ourselves staying in hotels and homes whose décor we love. We may see a pillow we'd love to buy for ourselves or maybe an entire room we'd like to recreate. In this month's feature project, the design of a young girl's room was inspired by the décor of a Swiss hotel the family stayed at. Designer Ronnie Harmon was presented with a photograph and was asked to recreate the look of the adjective "boudoir", as you'll see below. Teaming with Ronnie, we helped him complete the look with custom window treatments and an area rug. Read on to see how he was able to recreate this room based on the family's travel inspiration.

With the weather as warm as it has been for this time of year, it is hard to believe the holiday season is just around the corner. Not to worry, there's still time to spruce up the guest room. With the Hunter Douglas Holiday Savings Event, you can deck your halls in style!

Did You Know?
In the Ringling Circus, every performer sported costumes and gaudy
ornamentation — even the elephants. Ornate yet durable enough to withstand daily
use by the mammoth animals, one elephant blanket requires 75 yards of material,
trim and supporting canvas as well as thousands of rhinestones and sequins.
These ornate blankets can weight up to 200 pounds!
Travel Inspired Design
In our travels we often stay in homes or hotels whose décor we love and want to imitate in our own homes. The following feature project, the makeover of a young girl’s bedroom was inspired by the décor of a hotel where the family stayed in Switzerland. Designer Ronnie Harmon was presented with a photograph and asked to recreate the look and feel of the “adjective” boudoir.  Additionally, since this young girl will soon be heading off to college, this room needed to be designed to easily transition into a guest room.  Teaming with Ronnie, we helped him complete the look with custom draperies and an area rug. In styling this room, he chose pieces that are youthful yet transitional - pieces that transform well to a guest suite and also transcend future trends.
Starting with the walls that were already painted a soft blue gray, Ronnie chose a ‘modern’ Damask style wallpaper from Kravet for an accent wall. The soft gray and white pattern paper not only compliments the painted walls, but provides a beautiful backdrop for the upholstered bed.

All the furnishings invoke a French antique style.  Starting with the bed, the headboard and footboard a combination of painted and distressed wood with upholstered insets. The writing desk is hand painted to highlight the detail.

The fabric used for the draperies is a beautiful embroidery from Stout Fabrics that offers detail and texture to complete the room in a playful way.

This large room really needed an area rug to ground the beautiful furnishings and provide softness and warmth under foot. While not captured in these photos, a wool rug from Surya’s Artist Studio collection in cream tones was the perfect choice.
