We've tried to include a wide range of material, varying in both subject and price. And, for those of you who love a good deal (and who doesn't?), we've included three Harry Potter true first edition, first printings at a special price at the end of this email.

While we realize that not all of our friends and customers want to collect these vintage editions, we hope that as book lovers you will find the information on the history of these books interesting. CHARLES ADDAMS
Drawn and Quartered . With a Foreword by Boris Karloff. NY: Random House [1942]. 4to, [120]pp. Black quarter-cloth stamped in color red with color printed boards. B&w illustrations on nearly every page. Corners, top and bottom edges worn, fore-edge of boards slightly so, light discoloring of front hinge from binding glue, endpapers lightly yellowed with age, else an internally clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (a few small chips and tears at edges, top and bottom a bit worn, spine panel slightly sunned). Inscribed and dated by the author/artist, Charles Addams, with an original 6.5” x 5” ink wash cartoon.

First edition. A wonderful collection of Charles Addams’ cartoons from the early 1940’s featuring some of the first appearances of the Addams Family. The highlight of this volume is the stunning finished ink wash drawing by Addams.

[AESOP]
The Fables of Aesop and Others Translated into Human Nature. Designed and Drawn on the Wood by Charles H. Bennett. Engraved by Swain. London: Chatto and Windus, 1875. 8vo, [x] 22pp. Rebound in blue three-quarter leather with light blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt, with original cover and spine bound in at rear of volume. Marbled endpapers; color wood-engraved title, frontispiece, and 22 plates. Spine and corners a bit worn, some very slight internal foxing, else an internally clean, bright copy.

Second edition, being a reproduction of Bennett’s 1857 edition. One of Bennett’s finest works, capturing not only his humor and wit in the illustrations, but also retold by him. Eric Quayle writes that this work “contains some of Bennett’s finest and most vigorous work ( Early Children’s Books , p.217). Though Bennett tragically died at 38 due to tuberculosis, his works were well received and very popular. One of the more significant illustrated editions of Aesop.

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens . With Drawings by Arthur Rackham. NY: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1906. 8vo, xiv 176pp. Olive cloth pictorially stamped in gilt. Olive endpapers; 50 hand-tipped color plates with captioned tissue guards. An clean, tight copy with edges lightly rubbed, spine a little sunned, half-inch spot at bottom right of front cover, title and its tissue guard foxed, about half the other tissue guards lightly foxed. Nonetheless, an attractive copy with its beautiful pictorial stamping still bright. 

First US edition. The second of Rackham’s lavish illustrated editions, featuring 50 spectacular color plates. This story, from Barrie’s 1902 novel The Little White Bird, tells of the infant Peter Pan. This is the first illustrated edition of this story.

The Marvelous Land of Oz . Pictured by John R. Neill. The end-papers from life poses by the famous comedians, Montgomery and Stone. Chicago: Reilly & Britton, 1904. 8vo, 287pp. Dark red cloth pictorially stamped in dark navy blue, silver and green. Pictorial endpapers; 16 full-color plates and 118 b&w illustrations. A remarkably clean, tight copy, with spine ends and corners lightly rubbed, faint damp-staining to rear board, front hinge starting, a few pages soiled in margins.

First edition, second state, binding state B, bearing “Published, July, 1904” on copyright and the plate on pp 23 bearing the caption “Old Mombi puts Jack in the stable.” The second of L. Frank Baum’s beloved and best-selling Oz books, issued one year after “The Wizard of Oz” had become a smash hit on Broadway. T he boy Tip is befriended by the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Jack Pumpkinhead, H.M. Wogglebug, T.E., and the wooden Sawhorse as they strive to stop the evil witch Mombi and the revolt of the women of Oz. The Marvelous Land of Oz was the first books published by Reilly & Britton and the first of thirty-five Oz books illustrated by John R. Neill, revealing his first visions of Oz.

First edition. 1954 Caldecott Medal Winner! “In an old house in Paris that was cover in vines / Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines… The smallest one was Madeline.” Bemelman’s second Madeline picture book firmly established this endearing and adventurous young girl as a must for all nursery libraries. 75 years after publication it continues to be read by children everywhere!

First edition. The text of this wonderful picture book is from the Talking Heads song of the same name. Kalman’s pseudo-childish composition and style – imaginative and energetic, with lots of inventive asides – cleverly captures the energy of the song. Laid into this copy is a ticket stub from a 1989 David Byrne concert.

Advance Reader’s Copy, issued for reviews prior to publication of the first edition. After 15-year-old Clary Fray witnesses a murder by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing swords, she soon finds herself immersed into the world of the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. At first, Clary wants nothing to do with these people, but when he mother is kidnapped and she herself is attacked by a demon, she finds herself turning to the Shadowhunters for help. The basis for the 2013 film adaptation and the 2016-2019 television series.

Second edition, being the Donahue reissue of the Dillingham first edition. A beautiful copy in the rare dust jacket. Based on the newspaper comic strip originated by W. W. Denslow in 1901, and following the otherworldly adventures of the protagonist, Billy Bounce and the Pollywogs.

First edition, UK issue. This book of the grotesque creatures who love to torment unsuspecting humans features detailed illustrations and humorous tales depicting the goblins' mind and spirit. A wonderful companion to the 1986 film starring David Bowie, this is a gorgeously illustrated Who's Who of the goblin world.

A fine copy in original five-color pictorial dust jacket (lower spine end a tad rubbed, 1” closed tear at top left of rear panel). Signed by the author, Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton, and the artists, two-time Caldecott Medalists Leo & Diane Dillon .

First edition. In this wonderful adaptation of the West Indian version of Rumplestiltskin , the story of the wily trickster is gorgeously captured in the Dillon’s vibrant and colorful illustrations – all beautifully embellished and framed with a lush gold ink. Copies of this book signed by all three contributors are scarce.

Very early printing, probably second or third printing (the first having been issued in 1910). A beautiful retelling of some of the most famous Greek myths gorgeously captured in Maxfield Parrish’s lush and vibrant illustrations.

On the Irrawaddy. With Eight Illustrations by W[illiam] H. Overend. London: Blackie & Son, 1897. 12mo, 352pp +32 advts. Olive cloth pictorially stamped in white, pale pink,, brown, and gilt; a.e.g. 8 b&w half-tone plates. Spine ends and corners lightly worn, spine slightly cocked, contents a tad shaken, some light hand-soiling to margins, else a clean, tight, surprisingly bright copy.

First edition. Newbolt 77.1. Stanley, a young man whose uncle is a trader on the Indian and Burmese rivers, sets out to join him just as war is declared by Burmah against England. He joins the military where his familiarity with Burmese customs and language make him of such use that he is added to Sir Archibald Campbell's staff. After several narrow escapes in battles and adventures while scouting, he and a half -dozen men set out to rescue his captured cousin on to be besieged in an old ruined temple.

First edition. Newbolt 80.1. Terence O'Conner, a bright Irish lad, joins the Mayo Fusiliers as the Peninsular war begins, becoming a general’s aid. His bravery, quick wits, and industry is rewarded with a commission as Colonel in the Portuguese army and he goes on to distinguished service – even being mentioned twice in the general orders of the Duke of Wellington.

DIANA WYNNE JONES
Cart & Cwidder . NY: Atheneum, 1977. 12mo, [vi] 193pp. Light blue paper wrappers with cover printed in black. A near fine copy in an early copy of the dust jacket. 

Uncorrected proof. The first title in the Dalemark Quartet. Clennen and his children, Moril, Dragner, and Brid, travelling musicians in the land of Dalemark, allows a young stranger to journey with them. As war between North and South brews, Moril discovers that the ancient Cwidder he has labored to master could sound a note no one has imagined could exist outside the realms of legend and mythology.

First edition. In this companion to The Snowy Day and its sequels, Archie is on his way to meet Peter when he sees a stray cat. “Hi, Cat!” he says. An the next thing Archie knows, the cat is following him everywhere! The sixth book set in Peter’s world.

CHARLES KINGSLEY
The Water Babies . Illustrated in Color by A.E. Jackson. London: Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press [1929]. 8vo, 252pp. Gray- blue cloth pictorially stamped in gilt and navy; t.e.g. Pictorial endpapers; 16 color plates, pictorial title, and small b&w illustrations at chapter heads and tails. Spine sunned and rubbed at edges, corners a bit rubbed, cover slightly soiled. Some light foxing throughout, mostly in page margins (no plates affected), else a very attractive copy. 

1929 reprint (first published in 1920). Tom, a young chimney sweep, falls into a river after being chased from a house by an upper-class girl. There he appears to drown only to transform into a "water-baby.” Kingsley’s allegory of Christian redemption is also a thinly veiled protest of the mistreatment of the poor in 19 th century England and the practice of child labor. This classic children’s fantasy was first issued in 1863, two years before Lewis Carroll’s Alice. A.E. Jackson’s gorgeous watercolor highlight this lush edition.

First edition. A brilliant copy of this scarce book. The fifth of eight collaborations between these two giants of children’s books, issued three years after their Caldecott Honor winning A Very Special House . Ruth Krauss' poetic text describes a young boy’s wish to paint his bathroom blue (nixed by his Dad) and further descriptions of the kind of house he'd build if he had his druthers. Sendak’s watercolors sing!
