Wetutoskimetowin: 'to work on it together'

Did you know that on November 29, 2021, Speaker Myrna Driedger delivered the first-ever land acknowledgement at the beginning of a sitting of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba? Spoken land acknowledgements and signage are becoming more and more part of our daily lives. Click here to watch the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly deliver the acknowledgement.

In 2018 the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba partnered with Canada's History on a special publication called 'Treaties and the Treaty Relationship'. The magazine was guest edited by Treaty Commissioner Loretta Ross and featured stories from across Canada.

The publication was complemented with a Kayak version of the theme for younger readers and with an educator's guide.

Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces & Places

There are over 100 pictographs painted on the rock face along Paimusk Creek near Molson Lake in northern Manitoba. They depict the lives of First Nations peoples thousands of years ago, offering teachings and ancient knowledge along with predictions of what would happen on the First Nation's territory.

The annual TRCM student bursary has been awarded!

Congratulations to to Emily Sigurdson! Emily is a grade 12 student at St. Laurent School. Her winning essay submission was titled 'What It Means to Be Treaty People' and skillfully combined academic research and application, as well as personal reflection.

Emily is graduating in June and plans on pursuing post secondary education at Red River College Polytechic in either the business or medical field. Her advice for future graduates is that every Canadian should honour themselves, the past and their heritage. They should ask themselves “How do I live Treaty everyday?”

TREATY ED in the classroom

What are our In-School Support Teachers up to?

IN-SCHOOL SUPPORT:

Renée McGurry

"I spent a week at Prince Edward School, visiting 12 classrooms, a half day in each, introducing the Treaties and finishing with a classroom Treaty. Prince Edward school is a Ukranian/English immersion K-6 school in East Kildonan, part of the River East Transcona School Division. It's been an interesting week, engaging with students who have recently moved to Winnipeg, escaping from the war in Ukraine. Many have had to leave their fathers behind to fight and so it's been a big change for them. Half of the classes needed a translator, which was necessary as the majority of the students in the immersion classes had no English. I also had to include a bit about the geography of Canada, as they were not certain as to where their family had landed. It was wonderful teaching students who had a deep interest in learning about of the country that they now call home."

Our In-School Support Team is here to help! We can support you in the classroom in-person or virtually. We offer:

  • Co-teaching Treaty Education lessons
  • Help in implementing Treaty Education Kit resources
  • Tips on incorporating local Treaty history
  • Support for PLCs and staff professional development
  • We also offer French language support for Immersion and French classes. Make sure to note that you would like our French-speaking In-School Support teacher when you book.
