Wetutoskimetowin: 'to work on it together'

Spring means longer days and warmer weather and the opportunity to move your classroom out of doors. If you teach in Winnipeg or plan on travelling to the city with your students, don't forget to visit the Agowiidiwinan Centre at The Forks. The TRCM team offers class tours at no cost.

Don't forget our 'Snap & Share' contest (scroll down for info). This would make a great outdoor class activity!

TREATY ED in the classroom

What are our In-School Support Teachers up to?

IN-SCHOOL SUPPORT:

Penny Ross

"I led a session with students from Grades 2-6 and their parents from Manitoba Association Schooling at Home. The session was held in the cultural room at the Helen Betty Osborne Building. The space enhanced a sharing circle style with a relaxed atmosphere. The youth played a number of interactive games as they learned about Manitoba’s Treaties by using the ‘We Are All Treaty People’ tiled map available online at the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba website. Everyone loves bingo and the students were eager to find Manitoba towns then place their bingo chip on the correct spot on the Treaty map. Voices raised as children shouted out “Swan River, Treaty #4, for instance. The afternoon flew by as students identified the 5 First Nations groups in Manitoba and played the Treaty Nation game, complete with coloured cards. The slogan, “We Are All Treaty People,” rounded out the session as the group discussed the meaning using True and False statements. Students worked on their own Treaty Medals, discussed concepts included on the medal, and asked numerous questions throughout the afternoon. "
