In 2016, Ontario passed the first legislation of its kind in Canada declaring the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week. Treaties Recognition Week honours the importance of Treaties and helps Ontario students and residents understand the significance of Treaty rights, Treaty relationships and their relevance today. This year, Treaties Recognition Week was November 2-8. To learn more, Click Here.

Featured Teaching Resource

At the heart of Treaties is relationships. Treaty turning points are those that result in a change in the relationship between First Nations and their Treaty partner, which includes not only the Crown, but all Canadians.

This month's featured teaching resource is a series of student worksheets exploring Treaty Turning Points. Click the document to access.

Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces + Places

Fisher River Cree Nation, located at the south end of Fisher Bay on Lake Winnipeg, was established by former residents of Norway House. The residents petitioned the government for arable land during Treaty 5 negotiations in 1875. There was a delay in the move due to an outbreak of small pox in the nearby Icelandic colony. Two years later, when the quarantine was lifted, 200 people (43 families) made the journey south.

Catalyst Teacher Gathering

The Treaty Catalyst Teacher Learning Network (CTLN) met for the first time this year in Niverville, Manitoba on October 16th, 2025.

The network, a part of the Treaty Education for All plan put forward by Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning back in 2023, supports the work of divisional Treaty Catalyst Teachers as they lead Treaty Education in their respective divisions.

This meeting saw teachers up and on their feet, exploring Treaty making and thinking about the connection between Indigenous languages and Treaty, before gathering in the afternoon in an Unconference format to discuss topics under the overarching theme of Treaty Education in Manitoba 2025-2026 and beyond.

Thanks again (and always!) to the Catalyst Teacher group for their leadership and willingness to continue to extend their learning and to Niverville High School for hosting.

We have a course code!!

In 2018-2019, Treaty Education offered Manitoba schools a local-themed Treaty course for SIC registry. Since that time, over 250 Manitoba grade 12 students have attained credit in 'Grade 12: Treaties and the Treaty Relationship".

Manitoba Education has reworked the course and it is now an official social studies option entitled 'Land and Treaties: Relationships & Responsibilities'. The course code for credit registry is 0398.

Our team has curated a list of teaching resources for use in the 'Land and Treaties: Relationships & Responsibilities' course. The teaching resources are divided thematically by strands.

Treaty Education in New Zealand

Treaty Education is a curricular staple in Manitoba; but, did you know that Treaty education is also part of the K-12 educational landscape in New Zealand?

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a graphic novel that provides a fresh approach to the story of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. It covers a wide time span, from the arrival of Polynesian explorers to the signing of Te Tiriti, to the New Zealand Wars, and through to the modern-day Treaty settlement process.
