The Red River Heritage Fair is scheduled for May 7, 2026. The Treaty Education team will be there as presenters, displayers, and judges. Like last year, there will be a Treaty category. Our team is busy framing our annual Treaty Education Summer Institute. The institute is set to take place in Winnipeg on August 19 & 20, 2026. The theme for this year is 'From Treaty Table to Foreign Battlefield'. Keep a look out for a sneak-peak of the complementary teacher's guide, invited guest speakers, and field trips.

Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces + Places

Adhesions to Treaty 5 were made at God's Lake on August 6, 1909. Men were called into a Council to hear

the terms of the Treaty, which was then signed by Chief Peter Watt and councillors Big Simon and Peter Chubb.  The Cree name for God’s Lake is Manitou Sakayigun, which means “Lake of the Gods”.

Sharing Stories: Treaty Education in the Field

Update provided by River East Transcona School Division Catalyst Teacher, Bernadine Thompson.

Maple Leaf School’s Grade 2 teacher, Heather Buffie, wanted to have students become more connected to the land as well as build relationships with the living things in the community.

Their learning experience started with being on the land and then picking a local animal (they chose the woodpecker) and researching and writing a land acknowledgement from a woodpecker's perspective. Thompson had done this lesson with grade 6’s in the past and this was the first time with grade 2!

Strong friendships and relationships don’t just happen. They’re the result of building understanding over time, negotiating boundaries and coming to agreements. A Treaty is an example of this. Living on this land means we’re all connected to the layered Treaties and relationships of this place.
