Heritage fairs are an educational experience that develops and encourages awareness and interest in Canadian history – and Treaty history. They are a great way to engage your learners with Treaty history and heritage. This year’s Red River Heritage Fair has a judging category dedicated to Treaties and Treaty relationships. Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces + Places

In the early 1800’s, several thousand Dakota moved north from Minnesota into colonial British Canada. During the War of 1812, the Dakota joined British attacks on Fort Mackinac in the Great Lakes. The British awarded their Dakota allies with “Indian Peace Medals” which celebrated their participation and promised the Dakota protection from the U.S. Army in the future. After 1862, the Dakota used the medals to persuade the British to follow through on their promises.

Treaty Turning Points

What’s a turning point in history? It is a moment or event that significantly changes the course of history. Turning points can have broad scopes and far-reaching implications. They also can be local and their asssociated changes can be incremental.

At the heart of Treaties is relationships. Treaty turning points are those that result in a change in the relationship between First Nations and their Treaty partner, which includes not only the Crown, but all Canadians.

Each month the Treaty Education team will feature a Treaty turning point in history. This month the turning point centres on The Delgamuuk Case.

A heritage fair is an educational experience that develops and encourages knowledge and curiosity in Canadian - and Treaty - history. A heritage fair project showcases a student’s understandings about a topic and highlights their interests, research, historical thinking, and curatorial skills. Typically, the topic is organized in a visually appealing way on a backboard with written information, images, and props.

This year’s Red River Heritage Fair will feature a judging category on Treaties.
