Why God Invented Highlighters
One time Wheaton College invited singer-songwriter Rich Mullins to lead worship at Wheaton Chapel. Rich had a way of sharing from his heart between songs that could be rather edgy, even caustic at times. He knew how to ruffle feathers, and he wasn’t afraid to either.
Knowing his audience was largely an evangelical audience, Rich said,
“You know, all you evangelicals love to tell me that I have to be born again to see the kingdom of God. Because Jesus told that one guy, Nicodemus, in John 3, that he had to be born again. But if you tell me that, then I can tell you that you have to sell everything you own and give it to the poor in order to see the kingdom of God. Because, you know, Jesus told that other guy, the rich, young ruler, that he had to sell everything he had in order to be saved.
“But… I guess that’s why God invented highlighters. So we could highlight the parts we like, and ignore the rest.”
Rich wasn’t invited back to Wheaton after that!
This Sunday, we are going to look at the question of what we must do to be saved. And no, we aren’t looking at the Rich Young Ruler passage. We’ll be in Matthew 16 this week. But I sure hope you’ll be in your place to worship this Sunday. There are many important things we can think about, but there is nothing more important than the eternal salvation of your soul. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to get that one wrong.
See you Sunday! Bring your Bible (and maybe a highlighter, too)! ;-)
