Created by ongoing GCAC artist-in-residence Alicia Rojas, this public art project and publication is funded through a fellowship awarded by the 18th Street Arts Center-Creative Corps, a pilot initiative of the California Arts Council, and an awarded grant by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC). In addition, the project is supported by Grand Central Art Center (GCAC), Latino Health Access (LHA), the Office of Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento, Second District, and the City of Santa Ana.
The broader Poderosas includes a digital archive, a brass public sculpture and monument located at Latino Health Access headquarters in Downtown Santa Ana, CA. and a publication with photo portraits and QR codes that will transport readers to 63 oral histories that compose the collection of PODEROSAS, highlighting their individuality and simultaneously showcasing their unbeatable strength when they all come together to care and advocate for their community as a collective body.

BEN KINSLEY
CURRENT GCAC ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Ben Kinsley is fascinated with trees, nature, and sound. During his first visit as GCAC artist-in-residence earlier this year, we shared the City of Santa Ana’s 1869 origin story – William H. Spurgeon climbed a sycamore tree and spotted the area to build the town. Using the UFEI Big Tree Registry site, Kinsley discovered, along with the original sycamore tree that is still alive on 5th St., there are five champion big trees exist in Santa Ana – one national champion (Ficus Drupacea, Brown-Woolly Fig, next to Santa Ana's Main Public Library) and four state champions (including the Koelreuteria Paniculate pictured above). GCAC took Kinsley to these trees as research toward the development of a new project that, at this point, is planning toward a year-long series of programs and sound-based events at these five Santa Ana National/State champion tree locations - a private backyard, community park, Santa Ana Main Public Library, public street, and a cemetery.
Through introduction to local artist Julia Edith Rigby, who was exhibiting at GCAC during his first visit, the two have connected and Ben will be collaborating with Julia through a rooftop sound performance at the Bendix Building in Downtown LA on November 16th. More details on that upcoming performance can be found here.
Ben is currently visiting through the end of October. He will be back mid-November as his research and development for the project continues.

JACOB WENDT
SILVER STREET
GCAC CSUF MFA/ALUM RESIDENT
The GCAC MFA/MA Live/Work apartments are located on the second floor of our building. These apartments are available for rent to students accepted into Cal State Fullerton’s College of the Arts graduate programs.
Currently living at GCAC is musician Jacob Wendt, who recently graduated
from Cal State Fullerton with a Masters of Music; Jazz Studies & Commercial Music.
While at GCAC, he has recorded and is now releasing a new album. The album is a 1950s / 60s Blue Note style, hardbop quintet project (trumpet, tenor, piano, bass, and drums). It features eight songs, all original music of Jacob Wendt, with lots of influences from Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Hank Mobley. Production-wise, Jacob tried to get as close as possible to recreating a Hackensack-era Rudy Van Gelder recording session: playing live together all in the same room without isolation or overdubs and with a minimal microphone setup.
The LP version of the album is available by clicking this link:
Jacob also just launched a Bandcamp page for digital streaming and downloads as well. Here's the link for a digital download.
A release party is coming up soon, get tickets here:

PABLO HELGUERA
THE GRAND CENTRAL SINGING TELEGRAM CO.
2020 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROJECT
In March of 2020, as the Covid crisis begin shutting down the US and holding us up in our homes, GCAC began to explore possibilities of continuing our socially engaged artist residency program under the new situation of a pandemic. Through a conversation with artist Pablo Helguera, one of our paused onsite artists-in-residence, we developed The Grand Central Singing Telegram Co. This project explored the possibilities of connecting while stay-at-home orders were in place internationally. Chief Telegraphist Pablo Helguera delivered over 900 free Spanish, English, Italian, and French language singing telegrams live through Zoom conference technology from his home in Brooklyn through our GCAC system. Individuals in 19 countries and 42 states of the U.S. received messages from their special someone. Telegrams marked such occasions as 80th & 90th birthdays, 50th wedding anniversaries, individuals graduating high school and college, recovery from COVID-19, new births, etc. Upon hearing about the project, Western Union reached out to GCAC and became involved, providing financial support through their foundation and creating a promotional video for their networks that connected the project to the history of singing telegrams.
