MAYORS MESSAGE I Mayor Lyle Holmgren

Reflection and Optimism

by Lyle Holmgren

As we approach the end of the year, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey we’ve taken together. Serving this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and it has taught me more about unity, resilience, and hope than I ever imagined. Tremonton is a community strengthened not by circumstance, but by the character of its people.
Many of the insights I shared in those monthly messages originated from something my father told me when I was young:
During the summer of my fifteenth year, my dad hired me to work on his farm. I felt proud—proud to be trusted, proud to earn a little money, proud to be doing something meaningful. I bucked bales of hay, weeded the summer fallow in Blue Creek and Hansel Valley, hoed sugar beets, and irrigated crops. Hard work, but I loved it.
Dad was a rare combination of ordinary and extraordinary.  One day, he asked me to mow the lawn. After finishing, I dutifully wrote down my hours in the little notebook he had given me. When payday came, Dad scratched out the hours I spent mowing the lawn. Confused, I asked why?
He looked at me calmly and said,
“Lyle, you can’t expect to be paid for everything. Sometimes you do something just to make things better.”
It was a simple moment. A small correction. But it has stayed with me my entire life.
“Sometimes you do something just to make things better.”
He didn’t say it as advice — he spoke it as a truth, the kind you only realize after a lifetime of working, serving, and observing how people treat each other. Those words have stayed with me into leadership, especially during the hardest moments to navigate. And I’ll be honest: some of those tough moments weren’t just due to the daily pressures of public service, but also because of tragedies, disappointments, and the deeply human challenges many communities face.
Leadership has a way of placing those moments at your doorstep

CITY NEWS

Build Our Future Together - Connect With Us.

Tremonton is a unique city focused on connections. We are connected with our rich

heritage as a town founded by immigrants who created a welcoming, supportive community. We are connected in our vision of a bright future that remembers our roots, preserves our values, and grows with intelligence and intention without

compromising what makes our city special. We are connected to each other through our small-town spirit where neighbors know and help one another and residents and city officials alike listen and collaborate. We are connected to the land and nature with beautiful outdoor surroundings, fun adventures, and agricultural ties. We are connected to all that our valley offers— meaningful work, quality education, entertainment, incredible outdoor adventure, and more—as well as the world at large with easy access to key highways and lighting-fast internet connection. Tremonton is a City of Connections, and it’s what makes our town a gem of Northern Utah.

Neighborhood Partnership Initiative Gaining Momentum!

Last month, we introduced Tremonton’s new Neighborhood Partnership Initiative (NPI)—a program designed to strengthen communication, build unity, and give residents a greater voice in shaping the future of our community. We are excited to share that the City is now in the process of presenting the initiative to the Planning Commission, which is the next step to help guide this resident-driven effort as it is set to launch in early 2026. To learn more and get involved, residents are invited to attend one of two informational meetings on December 10th at 7:00 PM at the Tremonton City Offices. This is a chance to discover how the NPI will support neighborhood strengths, encourage community-building activities, and provide a clear path for residents to share ideas and feedback on local planning and city services. We hope you’ll join us as we continue working together to make Tremonton even closer and more unified.

Tremonton Fire Department

Cold weather doesn't stop our progress! Firefighters from the Tremonton Fire Department have teamed up with firefighters from Brigham Fire and Garland Fire to advance their knowledge. Our firefighters have been going through the certification process for the Apparatus Driver Operator- Aerial course. Their course teaches your firefighters and advances their knowledge on operations, driving, and setting up for the Ladder truck Tremonton Fire Department houses. We want to thank them for taking the time to better serve our community.

The holidays are fast approaching us. And while we want everyone to enjoy them with their loved ones, we'd like to leave you with a few safety tips.

1. Heating Safety

Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves.

Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, never a power strip.

Turn heaters off when leaving the room or going to sleep.

Have chimneys and heating systems professionally inspected each winter.

2. Candle & Decoration Safety

Use battery-operated candles whenever possible.

Keep candles at least 12 inches from decorations and curtains.

Only use UL-listed lights and electrical decor.

Replace light strings with frayed wires, loose bulbs, or damaged insulation.

3. Holiday Tree Safety

Choose a fresh tree: needles should not fall off easily.

Keep the tree watered daily to prevent drying out.

Place trees 3 feet away from heat sources.

Dispose of real trees promptly after the holidays; they dry out quickly and become hazardous.

4. Kitchen Safety

Never leave cooking food unattended—most holiday fires start in the kitchen.

Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from hot surfaces.

Turn pot handles inward and keep flammable items (towels, packaging, mitts) away from the stove.

If a pan catches fire, slide a lid on to smother it—never throw water on a grease fire.

5. Electrical Safety

Don’t overload outlets or extension cords.

Use outdoor-rated lights and cords for exterior decorations.

Turn off holiday lights when leaving home or going to bed.

6. Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarms

Install CO alarms on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas.

Test smoke and CO alarms monthly and replace batteries if needed.

Never use grills or generators indoors or in garages.

7. Winter Weather Preparedness

Keep sidewalks and driveways clear to prevent slips and to ensure emergency access.

Maintain an emergency kit with blankets, flashlights, batteries, and necessary medications.

Check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may struggle with heating or mobility.

8. Fireplace & Wood Stove Safety

Use a screen or glass door to keep sparks from escaping.

Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight lid—store it outside and away from buildings.

Burn only dry, seasoned wood—avoid trash, gift wrap, or treated lumber.

Parking in the Winter Months

December 1st marks the start of enforcement for the Winter Parking Ordinance. Please refrain from parking on the street between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. during the months of December, January, and February. This allows snow removal equipment and vehicles to clear the roads properly and keep everyone safe. SENIOR CENTER

Directors Message

In the hustle and bustle of the world we live in, and especially this month, I hope you each take some time to reflect on the many blessings that have graced your lives this year. I count each one of you as a blessing in my life. I love the greeting I receive with my office at the front door. We talked about glimmers (the little happy moments in each day) earlier this year. I hope that you all are seeing the glimmers in your life. If you struggle to see the positive, try being the positive. Smile at those you pass by. Say a kind hello to the cashier or delivery person you interact with. Wave to the children. This is my favorite; you never know what reaction you might get. I have been focusing on being hopeful for the future lately. It is easy to get lost in the negative and ugly things going on in our community and in our world. It is important for us to stay hopeful. Think about the good that can and should be done. Go about doing good my friends! Merry Christmas!
