A Note from the Mayor I Mayor Bret Rohde

A few thoughts on what happened when the Wi-Fi went out — and what I brought home from Washington

Last month, the internet line in our neighborhood was cut. For five or six hours, no Wi-Fi, no TV, no scrolling. I caught myself standing there asking, what do I do?

That was the part that got me. Not the outage. The question.

I hadn't realized how much of my downtime had quietly been handed over to a screen. So my wife and I did what people used to do on a regular weekday evening — we went out together. Ran an errand. Had dinner. Talked. I heard later that other neighbors on our street did something similar — went for walks, sat outside, spent time with their families in a way that didn't require a charging cable.

It wasn't dramatic. That's the point. It was just a few hours of being present with the people right in front of us, and it reminded me how much of that I'd been missing without noticing.

So here's a suggestion — just a neighbor's idea, not a rule from city hall. Pick one evening a week. Whichever one fits your life. Go for a walk. Sit on the porch. Visit someone. Let the phone sit on the counter for a couple of hours. See what happens...

CITY NEWS

Build Our Future Together - Connect With Us.

Tremonton is a unique city focused on connections. We are connected with our rich

heritage as a town founded by immigrants who created a welcoming, supportive community. We are connected in our vision of a bright future that remembers our roots, preserves our values, and grows with intelligence and intention without

compromising what makes our city special. We are connected to each other through our small-town spirit where neighbors know and help one another and residents and city officials alike listen and collaborate. We are connected to the land and nature with beautiful outdoor surroundings, fun adventures, and agricultural ties. We are connected to all that our valley offers— meaningful work, quality education, entertainment, incredible outdoor adventure, and more—as well as the world at large with easy access to key highways and lighting-fast internet connection. Tremonton is a City of Connections, and it’s what makes our town a gem of Northern Utah.

SENIOR CENTER

Directors Message

In The Wizard of Oz, at the end, little Dorothy from Kansas destroys the wicked Witch of the West. As she melts, she screams, “what a world, what a world!” I have quoted this line many times in my life. I feel it now more than ever. I never dreamed our piece of earth would ever be so far from peace. I wish that people could remember how to communicate and be respectful of other opinions. We don’t all have to agree, but we can still be respectful and caring. I hope that we can all gather at the Senior Center and be kind to one another. We are all adults who know how to speak about our different opinions and go on being friends. I truly want each of you to feel welcomed and appreciated when you walk through our doors.

Summer is here! Let the adventures begin. We have so many fun things planned for you this summer, and I am very excited. The summer picnic is just two weeks away, and always a fun time to be together while eating a great traditional picnic meal and visiting with our dear friends. This year’s theme is TV Gameshows! Do you have a costume you want to wear? Are there prizes you hope to win? Who will get the ZonK!
