The Trent Symons Campus Lands are a precious asset, rich in natural and cultural heritage, vital to the resilience of Trent and our communities. Our vision is to create an inspiring, sustainable, and complete community to learn, live, innovate, and be active. In our care for and use of the land, Trent will demonstrate leadership in environmental education and stewardship, respect for Indigenous Traditional Knowledge, and thoughtful integration of the natural and built environment.

Updates and New Initiatives
The spring is always a busy time at Trent University as we wrap up the academic year. The spring has been just as busy on the Trent Lands & Nature Areas Plan front after the plan was approved by the Board of Governors in February. We have a few updates and opportunities to get involved to share.
Funding applications are underway to support two initiatives outlined in the Plan - a Traditional Teaching Lodge and the University Green Network Systems Level Plan. If successful, these funds will help us bring these important projects to life. See more details below.
In March, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care granted a license for a 224-bed long-term care home to be built on the Symons Campus. This announcement is timely as detailed, four-season environmental studies and engagement with Michi Saagiig leaders on the University-Integrated Seniors Village are nearing completion. Learn more about this project, including next steps and how to get involved, below.

University Green Network - Systems Level Plan
We have submitted an application to secure funding to complete the Systems-Level Plan for the University Green Network (UGN). The Systems-Level Plan will consider the Nature Areas and the UGN as a whole to identify habitat types across the campus, and high-level opportunities for enhancement of the system. If the application is successful this process would kick-off in the Fall with opportunities for student and public engagement to provide up-to-date research and knowledge of the land.

Traditional Teaching Lodge
The Trent Lands and Nature Areas Plan placed a focus on Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and spaces for ceremony and gathering.A traditional teaching lodge was identified by Indigenous participants as a priority project to provide a sheltered outdoor teaching and gathering space for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and faculty, and the broader community, to learn from Elders and knowledge holders. With a central fire and natural bench seating to permit physically distanced gathering, it would be a safe and vibrant public space.
The Trent Elders & Traditional Knowledge Keepers Council and First Peoples House of Learning collaborated on the grant application. Should the application be successful, wok could begin in the Fall.

UNIVERSITY-INTEGRATED SENIORS VILLAGE
Advancing Long-Term Care in Peterborough
Trent’s vision is for a university-integrated seniors village anchored by a long-term care home. Building on Trent’s position as a globally recognized age-friendly university, the research expertise in the Trent Centre for Aging & Society, and the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing, the Seniors Village will provide hands-on learning opportunities for our students and advance research into aging, while meeting the growing need for aged care in Peterborough, the third oldest community in Canada. Integrated, community-based senior living will provide an opportunity for innovative research, education, student placements, and community engagement.
We're launching a new website to support easier engagement and idea-sharing, based on your feedback during the Trent Lands & Nature Areas Plan update.
Detailed four-season environmental studies and engagement with Michi Saagiig leaders on the Seniors Village site is nearing completion. We'll be sharing the study findings and the proposed site development limits based on the study results, for community review shortly.
- As outlined in the Trent Lands & Nature Areas Plan, environmental studies are completed in advance of and to inform detailed site design
- Study results and site development limits (Stage 1 Site Plan) will be shared for information and comment, before final submission to the City of Peterborough
- Once the development limits are approved, we'll work with campus and community partners on the vision for the Seniors Village and Long-term Care Home that will inform detailed site planning and further site-specific studies.
