Tri-C JazzFest, Edgewater Live, the Tall Ships, and an All-Star Game! As we settle in to enjoy all that CLE and Cuyahoga County has to offer this summer, we wanted to share some highlights from our corner of Carnegie and Ontario.
We have created this quarterly e-newsletter for you – our civic and community leaders – to share Tri-C updates and community news that may be of interest to you & your constituents. Highlights include:
- Tri-C Levy on the Ballot November 5th – Every five years, Tri-C has a levy on the ballot - 2019 is that year. Thanks to the ongoing support of Cuyahoga County voters, we're able to offer the lowest tuition rate in Ohio and a strong ROI to the community and our students. (Highlights below)
- Tri-C in the Neighborhoods - In June, Tri-C formally opened two Access Centers at Esperanza and Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in conjunction with CMHA - offering access to Higher Ed in areas that need it most. (Details below)
- Tri-C's Annual Appreciation Breakfast on June 20, honored Community Champions, Alumni, 2019 Advisory Committee of the year and featured a Blockchain discussion with Bernie Moreno.
- Tri-C Baseball Player headed to the Major League! Tri-C’s Brock Begue was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers as an 11th Round MLB draft pick. (See this article and more about our award-winning athletes below.)

Tri-C President Alex Johnson takes the helm
of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board
|
The AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s Community Colleges. The association represents nearly 1,200 two-year institutions that collectively educate more than 12 million students — nearly half of the nation’s undergraduates.
“I have seen again and again the tremendous impact community colleges have on lives and society,” Dr. Johnson said. “These institutions are at the forefront of degree attainment and workforce development in America.
I am honored to serve as board chair to expand on this effort.”

June 25 Tri-C Board Meeting
“Education is a building block for success,” said Tri-C President Alex Johnson, in making the announcement of the 2019 levy after the June 25th Board Meeting. “This levy is essential for providing County residents the opportunity to benefit from the power and value of an education at Tri-C.”
“For more than 50 years, Tri-C has enriched the lives of our community,” said Andrew Randall, the College Board of Trustees Chair. “The results show how vital the College is to the success of the county and its residents.”

|
The group was created in response to the increased focus on workforce training by Gov. Mike DeWine and his administration. The panel was organized by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.

Tri-C Access Centers Bring College Programs into the Community
Tri-C is collaborating with Esperanza Inc. and Olivet Institutional Baptist Church and CMHA on the first two centers. “Bringing the college experience and resources to these sites removes barriers to higher education,” Tri-C President Alex Johnson said. “Tri-C is meeting residents where they are to help them pursue degrees, workforce credentials and the opportunity for a better life.”

AT&T Commits $100,000 to Tri-C as part of ‘Believe Cleveland’ Initiative
|
AT&T’s financial commitment to Tri-C will be used to fund certificate programs for adults and scholarship opportunities in tech-based fields such as Blockchain. Along with the launch of “Believe Cleveland,” the global telco company also announced it will introduce mobile 5G service to the Cleveland area in early 2020.

Goldman Sachs Expands Program Following Success at Tri-C
In 2012, the program debuted in Ohio at Tri-C - one of seven sites in the country - providing small business owners with the tools to take their companies to the next level. Based on the success of the 700+ small businesses who have gone through Tri-C's program, it will now also be offered in Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati.

On April 30, Tri-C officially introduced the world to the revitalized Metro Campus Center.

Tri-C Officially Earns National
Voter Friendly Campus Designation
|
Tri-C is one of only a dozen community colleges across the country to earn the designation. Overall, only 123 campuses in 31 states were recognized for their work to develop a culture of democratic engagement.

In June, Tri-C's work with the Campus Vote Project and on-campus Democracy Fellows in the area of student voter registration was one of 12 U.S. Colleges and Universities highlighted in the national report.

Each year, Tri-C honors Community Champions
making a difference in the lives and career paths of Tri-C Students
|
|
Nominated by Tri-C Faculty/Staff, awards are given in three categories – Individual, Small Business (<50 employees), and Large Business (>50 employees,). This year – for the first time – two awards were given in the Individual category – one to a student and the other to an Associate Dean and his wife.
Awards were handed out by Tri-C President Alex Johnson at an annual gathering of 200+ Tri-C fans, Advisory Board members and supporters who gathered at Tri-C's Corporate College East on June 20th. This year, guest speaker Bernie Moreno - Chairman of OWNUM and President, Bernie Moreno Companies - joined Dr. Johnson in making the presentations.

The Economic Impact of Tri-C

The College's annual economic impact is $1.7 billion - equivalent to nearly 2% of the County's Gross Regional Product, supporting over 21,000 jobs.
One out of every 44 jobs in the County is supported by the activities of Tri-C and its students.
An associate degree grad will see an average earnings increase of $10,500/year & $338,500 more in lifetime earnings versus a grad with a high-school diploma.

The Triceratops left-handed pitcher is officially a professional baseball player.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 11th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Begue, one of the top junior-college pitchers in the country the past two seasons.

Dr. Michael Schoop Appointed to College-Wide Position
|
Dr. Schoop takes on the College-wide role of Vice President of Evidence, Inquiry and Retention, effective July 1. He has led Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus since 2006. The pivotal role involves a data-driven institutional effectiveness program focused on improving student retention and completion.
His position will build upon Tri-C’s considerable increase in graduation rates — nearly 300% from 2010 to 2017 — and its significant gains in student retention and number of degrees and certificates awarded.

Ohio Transfer Council Honors
Tri-C's Kimberly Liddell for her work with diverse populations
The Ohio Transfer Council (OTC) awarded Liddell its
Tom Vandermeulen Award, which recognizes contributions leading to enhanced relations among people of diverse backgrounds.
As a transfer specialist, Liddell helps Tri-C students moving on to four-year schools to pursue bachelor’s degrees. Much of her time is spent with first-generation college students finding their way through the halls of academia.

Tri-C's Mark Rodriguez
Athletic Director of the Year
The honor — voted on by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference's athletic directors — follows award-winning seasons by Tri-C’s baseball and softball teams. Two team members from each team also earned All-American honors.
Rodriguez has been with the College for more than three decades,and is based at the Western Campus Student Life office. This is his second nod for the award.

Tri-C Selected as Military Spouse Friendly School
Tri-C one of 200 schools out of 8,880 institutions reviewed receiving the honor Cuyahoga Community College works with thousands of military families a year through its veteran services centers, which offer a full array of services that build toward educational and career goals.
Early in 2019, Tri-C received a Top 10 Gold Military Friendly School designation from VIQTORY for the 10th straight year.

Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is Ohio's first community college and remains one of the state's largest community colleges, serving more than 51,000 students each year. To date, more than 900,000 county residents have come through Tri-C's doors.
The college offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum includes over 1,000 credit courses in more than 300 career, certificate and university transfer programs. Courses are offered at four campus locations, two Corporate College facilities, many off-campus sites, and via television and internet.
