In this June 2021 update, we share Tri-C actions and community resources designed to help our students, employees, and the community find new ways to thrive post-pandemic. Highlights include:

The President's Visit –
A Great Day for the College, Higher Ed & CLE
President Biden Offers a Look Forward at Pandemic Recovery & Rebuilding American Job Pathways with the Help of Higher Education
President Biden shared his Blue Collar Blueprint For America in a live broadcast to the nation on May 27, from the Tri-C Manufacturing Technology Center (MTC) on the Downtown Cleveland Metro Campus. The President noted, "America is at an inflection point, with an opportunity to breathe new life into a recovering economy through education, jobs and investments in infrastructure." His plan includes increased funding for education & better access to higher education, particularly at community colleges.

At the close of his nearly three-hour visit, Tri-C President Alex Johnson noted, “It was a privilege to show our nation’s leader all of the ways in which we are preparing students for careers in manufacturing and technology and supporting the nation’s recovery through access to higher education.” In addition to the tour and national press conference, the visit included chats with students, faculty and staff. 2021 Tri-C Presidential Scholarship Luncheon
A Conversation with Lady May
The Tri-C Foundation's annual event, held virtually May 13th, featured a conversation with the Right Honourable Theresa May, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The discussion was moderated by PNC Regional President & Tri-C Foundation Board Director Pat Pastore (pictured.) It also raised over a $1M for student scholarships, including a major donation from Community Partner Medical Mutual of Ohio.
Funds generated by the event "create scholarships that turn students into graduates & dreams into success stories." Since its inception in 1992, the Tri-C luncheon has raised nearly $22 million for students. Funds raised in 2021 will benefit students pursuing careers as first responders. More
2021 Commencement Celebrations
Tri-C June 9th Commencement Celebrates Nearly 2,200 Spring Graduates
The pool of graduates included over 200 Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members, eight Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Scholars, 68 students from the College Credit Plus program, and 21 members of Tri-C's first Say Yes Scholars program cohort. The college also awarded Honorary Degrees to retired KeyBank Chairman & CEO Beth Mooney and Saint Luke’s Foundation President & CEO Timothy L. Tramble, Sr. Tri-C President Alex Johnson noted the year was "a testament to the spirit of perseverance that exists at Tri-C." More

Tri-C Honors 46 Graduates of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) Program – Goldman Sachs President and COO John Waldron, who attended the June 7 event, noted the entrepreneurial spirit of Cleveland's business community. Tri-C has guided over 700 graduates through the program since 2012. More
Tri-C Selected for National Project Building Job Pipelines The College is one of four institutions selected for an Achieving the Dream project aimed at strengthening the crucial role community colleges play as connectors between education and employment. The two-year initiative will establish Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) bringing together faculty, workforce development professionals, high school educators, community organizations, and employers. Tri-C's Stand For Racial Justice Alliance hosted a virtual community conversation on the Legacy of George Floyd with Mr. Floyd's aunt and uncle. The event, moderated by minister, activist, and scholar Nyle Fort, is part of an ongoing initiative.

The Alliance was formed to build upon the College's work in conflict resolution, social justice and sustained dialogue to find meaningful ways to convene and engage our students, faculty and staff as well as the broader community. Learn more about it here.

Four Students Among Top 200 In America
Scholars Ready to Take on the World
Tri-C Scholar Geri Bakushi earned two top national academic honors in 2021, placing him among the Top 20 Community College (CC) honorees in America.

  1. All-USA Academic Team – Only 20 students are chosen for achievement in the classroom and leadership on campus. It is considered one of the top honors for CC students. More
  2. 2021 New Century Transfer Scholar - only 50 students (one/state) were chosen from 2,000 candidates for the honor and scholarship. More
Only 150 Community College students in the U.S. are named to the National Coca-Cola Academic Team.

Stomp Card Wins National Award
Tri-C students are officially carrying the “best designed ID card in the nation” – among universities or colleges. The card features Stomp – a teal Triceratops – the College’s first official mascot and also the name for all of its sports teams. Tri-C was among three Ohio schools in the national NACCU competition. Details

with 12 Scholars Named to the
2021 All-Ohio Academic Team

The All-Ohio Academic Team recognizes student excellence in academics, leadership and community service. Tri-C students claimed 12 of 73 scholarships awarded, the most in the state. Details
Tri-C Alum Ben Wallace Set To Enter the NBA Hall of Fame

Four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and NBA Champion Ben Wallace played two years at Tri-C in his college years. Ben was later part of a powerful Detroit Pistons team that won the 2004 NBA title over the LA Lakers. He amassed four NBA Defensive Player of the Year Awards in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. The talented Tri-C Alum will be inducted in the Class of 2021 this September. Tri-C Professor Jim Funai Named President of Ohio Landscape Association Board
Funai has helped build the College’s horticulture program into one of the nation’s best. “My students at Tri-C have job offers waiting for them when they graduate." More

The YWCA Greater Cleveland honored Tri-C’s vice president of communications, Jenny Febbo (left), and vice president and general counsel, Renee Richard (right), as part of its 45th annual Women of Achievement Awards Celebration. The awards are given to those who "exemplify high professional standards and evidence of career and personal growth." More
2020-2021 Innovation of the Year Award Winner – Tri-C
The innovative work of five Tri-C instructors –including Jim Funai profiled above – brought the award to the College. It was based on their program Bringing the Outside In: Connecting Online Learners to the Outdoors. More
Tri-C Students Selected for Art Competition – Five students have been selected to represent Cuyahoga Community College in the 35th Annual League for Innovation Student Art Competition. They will go on to compete with their peers across North America later this year. The annual event showcases a selection of the best work being created by today's community college students.
Serving Our Veterans – a Tri-C Priority
Tri-C is proud to be recognized again as a Military Friendly Spouse School for its commitment to serving those married to active duty service members and veterans. Learn More

Earlier this year, the College proudly received a Military Friendly School designation for the 12th consecutive year & is ranked as a Top 10 Gold school for veterans and their families.
Earning a Tri-C Nursing Degree while deployed overseas – US Air Force Reservist Andrew Pavell earned his nursing degree while deployed in Afghanistan. Pavell overcame COVID-19 restrictions and an eight-hour time difference to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing, with assistance from a fellow medic who helped him study. More

Tri-C's 2021 JazzFest warms up summer nights for the 42nd year. The 2021 event is presented by KeyBank, in partnership with Cain Park in Cleveland Heights.

This year’s two-day outdoor festival will feature a variety of national acts performing under the covered Evans Amphitheater. The festival will offer a free livestreaming service too.

Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is Ohio's first community college and remains one of the state's largest community colleges, serving more than 51,000 students each year. To date, more than 1,000,000 have come through Tri-C's doors.

The college offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum includes over 1,000 credit courses in more than 300 career, certificate and university transfer programs. Courses are offered at four campus locations, two Corporate College facilities, many off-campus sites, and via television and internet.
