February is the month of love and renewal. Its name comes from an old Roman cleaning festival called Februalia, where people would wash themselves to start fresh. This is the month that reminds us that it's time to get rid of old man winter and get ready to be filled with the warmth and affection of spring.
February is also a month dedicated to encouraging discussions on important cultural events and disease prevention. Causes such as Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer, Heart Disease and Black History come to mind when talking about the shortest month of the year. Let us take time to increase our awareness about cancer prevention and heart health self-care and prevention, and to celebrate the achievements and contributions that African Americans have made to our country and culture.
