NIHB’s Public Health in Indian Country Capacity Scan (PHICCS)—Still Time to Participate!

There is still time to support the National Indian Health Board’s (NIHB) efforts in creating a national-level, comprehensive profile of public health in Indian Country! NIHB, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is currently gathering information from Tribal health directors across Indian Country as part of the Public Health in Indian Country Capacity Scan (PHICCS) . The information from this scan will be used to create and disseminate a national-level, comprehensive profile of the public health system and infrastructure in Indian Country. This profile will be vital to increasing the knowledge of Tribal and federal health leaders and advocates. The deadline for participation is July 31, 2019, so please help to ensure this scan has comprehensive participation from across Indian Country. Read more here.

Registration is now open for the National Indian Health Board’s (NIHB) 36 ^th Annual National Tribal Health Conference, taking place September 16-19, 2019 in Temecula, CA . The conference aims to feature novel approaches in improving the quality of health systems, strengthening the business of medicine, pathways for successful advocacy efforts, enhancing government to government relationships, and evidenced based, wise, best or promising practices developed in and for Tribal communities. Additionally, NIHB encourages Tribal leaders, health directors, policy specialists, advocates, and allies to submit proposals for 3-hour seminars and 90-minute workshops for the conference. Proposals can be submitted here.

SAMHSA Funding Opportunity: Tribal Opioid Response Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SMHSA) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2019 Tribal Opioid Response (TOR) grants. The TOR grants program aims to address the opioid crisis in Tribal communities by increasing access to culturally appropriate and evidence-based treatment, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using one of the three FDA-approved medications for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The intent is to reduce unmet treatment need and opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment and/or recovery activities for OUD. Read more here.

Center for Sharing Public Health Services CJS Small Grants Program

The Center for Sharing Public Health Services is now offering small grants to support cross-jurisdictional sharing (CJS) arrangements that fit into one of their Project Classifications. Applications that address at least one of the Priority Topic Areas will be given preference. Up to five awards will be made for an amount of up to $10,000 for a project period of up to eight months. Additionally, technical assistance will be tailored and provided to each grantee’s needs. Read more here.

Webinar: Mental Health Response to Disasters: Natural Disasters (Part 1)

Region IV Public Health Training Center is hosting a two-part series of webinars on mental health response to disasters. This first webinar will discuss a mental health response to both natural and human-created disasters, including the differences between the two, with the use of case studies and an emphasis on natural disasters. The webinar will also cover the relationship between the mental health and public health sectors and how these two groups work together during a natural disaster. Read more here.

ADA Discussion on SDPI and Special Statutory Funding Program for Type 1 Diabetes Research

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has recently announced that it will be holding a discussion on the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI) as well as the Special Statutory Funding Program for Type 1 Diabetes Research. Guest speakers include Dr. Griffin Rodgers, the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and Dr. Ann Bullock, Director of the Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention at Indian Health Services. Webinar: Mental Health Response to Disasters: Human-Created Disasters (Part 2)

Using recent human-created disaster case studies, this second webinar will discuss the phases of a mental health response to human-created disasters as well as the factors that lead to resilience. Travel Scholarship - Tribal Public Health Emergency Preparedness Summit

NIHB will reimburse approved Tribal Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Summit attendees up to $500  of reasonable travel expenses for those flying to attend the Summit and  up to $100  of reasonable travel expenses for those driving to attend the Summit.

Tribal-State-Local Relationships for Public Health Improvement Forum

This one-day forum will bring together Tribal, state, and local public health entities in Arizona for networking, and to encourage the development of capacity-building partnerships for public health improvement efforts. These efforts include building partnerships, public health accreditation, performance management, quality improvement, workforce development, and data-driven decision-making. Fourth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition

September 15-18, 2019 in Prior Lake, MN

 

The Fourth Annual Conference on Native American Nutrition is the only conference series in the world devoted to the food and nutrition of Indigenous Peoples. Tribal officials, researchers, practitioners, funders and others will come together this fall to discuss Native nutrition, dietary health and food science. Specific session topics will include youth voices, urban and rural nutrition issues, and more. An agenda is currently available online.
