Biden Administration Releases Fact Sheet Outlining Plan to Get Americans an Updated COVID-19 Vaccine Shot and Manage COVID-19 this Fall

On September 8, 2022, President Biden delivered remarks highlighting the arrival of updated COVID-19 vaccines. This updated COVID-19 vaccine will provide increased protection against COVID-19, especially since there is a potential for a surge of infections this fall and winter. The Administration aims to ensure these protection tools are widely available and easily accessible to all Americans. If all of us do our part, we can keep people safe, manage COVID-19 and minimize disruptions this fall and winter. Remember, vaccination is our strongest defense against COVID-19, and getting a booster shot is an easy way to show your Act of Love to your community!

White House Releases First Annual Report on Progress Towards Implementation of American Pandemic Preparedness: Transforming our Capabilities Plan (AP3)

On September 3, 2022, the White House released the First Annual Report on Progress Towards Implementation of the American Pandemic Preparedness Plan. This document was organized based on the American Pandemic Preparedness: Transforming our Capabilities Plan (AP3) pillars, and it enables innovation in pandemic preparedness and public health response. It will ensure that the transformative capabilities developed are accessible and available to all populations, especially vulnerable communities, to reduce the lives lost from public health threats, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September 2021, the White House released AP3 to accomplish the transformational capabilities needed to address future threats. AP3 contains five pillars that will enable transformative, life-saving innovations in pandemic preparedness. Tribes were hit hard by COVID-19, but vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics could prevent more death. The pillars presented in AP3 may assist tribes in the prevention of a future pandemic that may be more severe than COVID-19.

Project Firstline Recognizes Environmental Services Week

September 11-17, 2022, is Environmental Services (EVS) Week. It is a time to show appreciation for the dedicated EVS personnel that ensure healthcare facilities across the country are clean, safe places for patients, their families, and other staff members. With all the challenges and changes the last few years have brought, these staff members have remained resilient in their efforts to protect others from dangerous pathogens. National Indian Health Board’s (NIHBs) Project Firstline (PFL) partners at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a new resource, How to Read a Disinfectant Label, which helps explain the different components included on the label of a disinfectant product. PFL partners at the Association for the Health Care Environment (AHE) also offer a variety of resources to support EVS personnel in their work to keep environments safe and clean across all care settings. Thank you, Tribal EVS staff, for the work you do to keep the healthcare workers you work with, the Tribal members you serve, and our Tribal communities safe.

Support for 988 Tribal Response Cooperative Agreements

On September 9, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released new data that shows that over the first month of transition to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988 Lifeline) there has been a 45 percent increase in overall volume and substantial improvement in answer rates and wait times compared to August 2021. To build on this progress, HHS, through the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is also announcing a new $35 million grant opportunity to better support 988 Lifeline services in Tribal communities, which face unique challenges to accessing technology and crisis services. This funding will result in more trained crisis counselors being able to connect with even more people in need.

Up to 100 awards will be funded over two years. Eligibility is limited to federally recognized Tribes and Tribal organizations, and applicants may elect to apply as part of a consortia. Urban Indian Organizations are also eligible to apply.
