RFI - TRANSPORTATION REAUTHORIZATION
The current authorization for Federal surface transportation programs is set to expire on September 30, 2026. In preparation for the next surface transportation reauthorization bill, and to ensure that the public's perspectives and ideas are considered, the Department of Transportation (DOT) invites the public to provide ideas, comments, and information for consideration in the development of the next surface transportation authorizing legislation. As we approach reauthorization, DOT seeks to engage a broad range of stakeholders to assess what has worked, what needs improvement, and what new priorities should be included.
Deadline for comments: August 20, 2025

WEBINAR - QUICK BUILDS IN INDIAN COUNTRY: ADVANCING ROAD SAFETY THROUGH COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Date: August 28, 2025
Time: 1:00 PM CT
Description: This webinar will provide tribes and other communities with a step-by-step process for planning, designing, and implementing quick-build traffic calming projects.
In 2024, the Pueblo of Jemez, Cherokee Nation, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, University of Montana, and America Walks were awarded a Road to Zero traffic safety grant to develop effective strategies for addressing the disproportionate impact of pedestrian fatalities in Indian Country. According to Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design, Native people are more than three times as likely to be killed while walking, compared with the average American. The project focused on engaging the community on the issue of road safety and then installing temporary structures which redesign roadway geometry to slow vehicle speeds.
Project team members will discuss the details involved in designing and implementing these “hands-on” public events and present the evaluation results and lessons learned. Plans to establish a national coalition focused on preventing traffic deaths and injuries in Indian Country will also be announced.

Every day, about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that's one person every 42 minutes. In 2023, 12,429 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths. These deaths were all preventable.
You can help put the BRAKES on drunk driving deaths:
- Before drinking, designate a sober driver or schedule a ridesharing or taxi service.
- If you’re hosting a party with alcohol, offer non-alcoholic drinks and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.
- Always wear your seat belt - it's the best defense against drunk drivers.
- If you see a drunk driver, safely pull over and call law enforcement.
