Dear ,

As we step into mid-April, remember those lost and those who survived or were affected by the bombings of Oklahoma City seventeen years ago. Our thoughts are with all who were affected and lost loved ones.

Spring is here and so are the 6,000 daffodils Tribute Center volunteers planted last October at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. Look for daffodils planted throughout New York City as part of the New Yorkers for Parks Daffodil Project, a living memorial to the events of 9/11.

"All connected hand in hand,

Nobody could break this powerful band.

But one this horrific of all days,

They each had gone their separate ways."

Middle school student, IS 259, Brooklyn

The Tribute WTC Visitor Center will hold a community poetry reading on Monday, April 30 from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.  The reading will feature poetry by students in two schools, IS 259 in Brooklyn, NY and Elysian Charter School in Hoboken, New Jersey.  Additional writers are invited to read poems, but they must be submitted in advance. Please email emares@tributewtc.org to submit work.

Poems may describe feelings, observations, thoughts, big changes, small changes, perceptions, what has changed and what has stayed the same since the attacks of 9/11. Poets will be notified prior to the reading whether their poem will be read.

This 6th Annual Tribute Center Poetry Reading is held in recognition of National Poetry Month. The featured student poems are being presented in conjunction with Tribute Center's latest exhibit, it's not just a date: #september 11th, which features outstanding projects created in four classrooms where educators took unique approaches to exploring the history of the attacks and the changes in our lives since. Included in the exhibit are the words, reflections and questions of young people who are now between 11 and 18 years old, and their thoughts about how the events of 9/11will  impact their future.

The Tribute WTC Visitor Center's Volunteer Program offers an opportunity for people directly affected by the events of September 11th to lead guided walks on the 9/11 Memorial. All volunteers are drawn from the community of survivors, lower Manhattan residents and workers, rescue workers, volunteers at the site and family members that lost loved ones. Guides are trained to talk about the history of the World Trade Center and the impact of September 11th, and share their own personal experiences and inspire visitors with the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. In addition to the walking tour program, Tribute volunteers can also act as gallery guides in the Tribute Center, interacting informally with visitors or concluding visits of school groups.

If you have a direct connection to the events of 9/11 and would like to volunteer at the Tribute Center, the next volunteer class will be held Friday April 27 and Saturday April 28.  For more information, contact volunteer@tributewtc.org or please call

212 422 3520 ext. 112.

TRIBUTE CENTER WELCOMES PORT AUTHORITY RETIREES

The Tribute Center extended a special invitation to the Port Authority Retirees Association (PARA) and the response was overwhelming. More than 200 PARA members are expected to attend on May 1st, when Tribute will be closed to the general public for PARA members to tour Tribute's galleries and visit with old friends.

The Port Authority built the World Trade Center, and the complex was home to its employees from 1973 until the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  PARA members have deep connections to the WTC site; many were profoundly affected by the terrorist attacks on February 26, 1993 and September 11th, 2001. The visit is an opportunity for PARA members to learn about the Tribute Center programs. It promises to be a very moving and memorable day for both Port Authority retirees and Tribute Center staff.

REMEMBERING OUR FRIENDS FROM OKLAHOMA CITY

Please join the September 11th Families' Association in observing 168 seconds of silence beginning at 9:02am on Thursday, April 19, 2012, the seventeenth anniversary of the terrorist bombing of Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Building.

On April 19, 1995, 168 people were murdered and many injured when Timothy McVeigh destroyed the federal building in Oklahoma City with a bomb.

Survivors and family members of the bombing have been loving friends and advisors to the survivors and families of the September 11th attacks for many years. Their example of courage and kindness continues to inspire and help us.
