MAKING AN IMPACT: STUDENTS REFLECT ON 9/11

This year, the educational department of the Tribute Center is focusing attention on building support for the teaching of 9/11 content for all classrooms. In addition to our classroom resource kit available online nationally, and emphasis on teacher training, we are also working on developing a "grass roots" network of local teachers that become leaders in their schools to teach 9/11. During January and February, over 1,700 New York City students, grades 4 - 12 have visited.

Most of these students were privileged to start or end their visit by talking to a specially trained 9/11 community docent. Tribute Center docents share their personal experiences illustrating to students the enormity and impact of 9/11. Following a visit from a group of students, a parent coordinator said, "I would like to thank you for the wonderful experience that we had. The center and the fact that we got to meet individuals that have a direct connection to that historical moment was invaluable."  --Parent coordinator, Middle school in the Bronx

Returning back to class thereafter, "I was so inspired by the impact this field trip has had on the students.  A girl read an essay to me about her experience and it was one of the best essays I've ever read in 22 years of teaching."  --5th grade teacher from the Bronx.

VISITOR CARDS FROM THE TRIBUTE CENTER

Each day at the Tribute Center, visitors from all over the world give back to us through their writings and drawings, in the most unforgettable ways. They prove that we must keep teaching, sharing, and learning.

Each card invites visitors to share their thoughts. It is just as valuable as a visitor to write thoughts in response of hearing 9/11 stories, watching videos and looking through photos, as it is for us to read them.
